View Full Version : Kirkey seats comfort level?

I ordered these with my kit, not sure of what I got myself into. I just didn't want the low traditional seats, so I ordered the Kirkeys. My build will be 80% street, 20% track.
Can those who have lived with the Kirkey seats for a while give me some comments on the comfort level?
Also, how much more difficult they make it to get in and out of the car...
I'm 5'10", 180lbs, so I don't have a problem fitting, just wondering about the hassle of getting in and out of them, along with how long you can drive before you start feeling uncomfortable.

I have the Kirkey drag seats (same bottom, but no wings on the top). In a roadster, they're a bit of a pain to get in and out of...I have to lift myself up with my hands on each of the hip retainers and swing my legs out. It's also a little harder to reach to tighten the lap belt portion as you have to sort of reach around the outside of the seat to pull the belt, normally I leave the door open until I am buckled. Not sure how this would work in a coupe. As far as sitting in the seat itself, they are pretty comfortable; surprising given the construction. I don't get fatigued from sitting in them. That padded cover goes a long ways. Also getting them set at the correct incline helps. More padding can be added if needed as well. They can be a little warm in the summer as they hug your hips. Overall I like them, but I think this is an honest description.

I am about your size and they are comfortable once you get in, they do restrict access a little. I have a gel seat cushion to add a little padding and they are good for long drives, 3 hour plus at a time.
You do have to lift yourself out of the seat because the seat is below the door sill but I am nearly 65 and it is not a big deal.

After I added another 1 inch piece of foam to the seat area, comfort was greatly improved. The seats were great for AutoX, but a they limited how much you could move around in the seat. Fortunately I moved my parking brake handle to the top of the transmission cover. You could never be able to reach the PB handle in the original placement. With 4-point harnesses in use, I don't think the passenger could reach the PB handle in the original configuration. Other than the freedom of movement issue, the seats were fine.

Agree- for larger people if the roadster wasn't hard enough to get in/out of the Kirkeys definitely make it even more of adventure. And once you're in, you're in. They are quite restricting, or provide an intense sense of security depending on your perspective. I really like the strapped in cockpit feel. I would say overall VERY comfortable though. I'd give them a "like"

I'm a fairly well fed fella, 6'0" and meander between 240-270 depending on life.
I fit snuggly, but don't mind them. Once you're in you're in as others have said (and I'm in a gen2 coupe).

Get seat belts that pull up instead of down for the lap belts.
My Kirkey's are 16 years old and the padding is shot. I've been stuffing those jell seats cushions under them to limp along until I decide what to do long term with replacing them with something a bit more "road" friendly. I like the look of the Cobra Monoco seats but the price has been keeping me away due to other priorities. Once seated in the Kirkeys they are comfortable enough. I've done many long trips in them and just yesterday I was in the car for about 12 hours and really can't complain about the seat comfort. As others have stated they are a bit of a PIA getting in and out of. For reference I'm 5'9" and 180lbs.

I added some Temperfoam/Confor Foam padding from Spruce Aircraft. I found them to be extremely comfortable on long trips. They also put you closer to the floor than most other seats do.

"Overview
Confor Form (formerly called Temperfoam) is the conforming foam cushion that was developed for the “Astronaut’s Couch” back in the Apollo space program. Confor Foam has the capability of absorbing a tremendous amount of impact shock compared to common polyfoam and it is flame resistant....."
