View Full Version : Power Steering rack question
I've been trying to search for a description of the parts on these racks and cannot find what I'm looking for. It's a 2001 Mustang rack, and there is a tube, about a 1/4" diameter, that runs from one of the rubber boots to the other. I've been reassembling the car since I got it back from paint, and when I was under the front, I noticed that one end of this tube was out of the fitting location on one of the boots. What is this tube, and what exactly is it's intended purpose? I know it's kind of a stupid question, but I really have no clue. Thanks

The tube equalizes air pressure in the boots as one compresses and the other expands when you turn.
Thank you, John. That makes total sense now that you explained it. If the tube becomes disconnected from one of the boots is there any possible issue if I don't pick up on it?

Rick, IMO the biggest issue would be debris or water getting into the boot through the hole and contaminating the grease. Does that tube have any sort of flare on the end of it? IIRC, mine does and that keeps it from popping out of the boot. If yours doesn't, it would be pretty easy to flare the end to get it to stay in place a bit better.
I didn't even think about that. I guess it's time to break out the Eastwood flare tool. I may see if I can get a small spring clamp on there as well. Thanks.
