Trunk lid gas strut length

Hey everyone.

For those that use Mike Everson’s trunk support kit for the Mk2 - Mk3.1, can you tell me the length or better yet part number for the gas struts? I sent Mike an email to purchase his kit but no reply so I figure I’ll make my own. Because I have a Mk1, I’ll need to get/make a custom trunk side bracket, which isn’t an issue.

Mike replied to my initial email.
He no longer sells these kits. He says they simply don’t work that well.
I searched extensively for several hours, a task I’m rather proficient at, and results dating back to 2004 all said the same. Almost everyone recommended Mike’s kit and commented on how well it works. So if the person selling this design no longer does because the design over time can deform the lids, or stress the hinges to possibly break over time, then that’s information that should be available to the public and dopes like me looking to do this. Mike was kind enough to give me the gas spring number used in his kit from McMaster Carr. (Thanks again Mike!)
I’ve ordered the parts but now need to decide if I’m doing this.

That's a shame that Mike is no longer going to sell that kit. I explain in the video below how to install the kit without having the issues with the trunk lid deflecting and proper orientation of the struts. Might be worth a watch Mark.
