Hi everyone. I have an older completed MkIII that has been on the road for years. I like longer road trips but never seem to have enough room. This winter I am planning on creating some space using Russ's drop trunk and moving the battery. Will an FFmetal battery box fit in a Mk III with 3 link and a VPM sway bar? Any pics out there with this combo in place?

Thanks!
Geoff

I own FFmetal.com and I can tell you that my battery box will fit just fine, as my car is also a 3-link with a VPM sway bar. I don't have the drop trunk, but the box goes in a different area of the trunk as that mod. Here are the instructions for the MK3, you'll see where it goes (as far left as you can get it) http://www.ffmetal.com/batteryboxinstructionsMK3.html

Well a guy can’t get any better and answer than that. Thanks Bill!

Four years ago, I did the same mods that you are going to do, with the same 3 link and VPM bar.

You will love the extra room.

Be aware that the box is made for a group 34 battery.

I know it would mean re-routing the battery cables, but I'd move the battery to the front. I don't like the battery in the rear where it's difficult to get to, also low upfront, right side helps balance it a little better. Just a thought

Thanks gentlemen. Derald - good to know it can be done. Rich, I sure have been giving that some thought too. My motor is out right now (another story) so for ease of installation of the breeze tray now would be ideal. Thanks for the feedback/thoughts!

I am very happy with the Breeze front tray. Shorter cables, better weight balance, more trunk space, and direct access all make this a good option.

Keep the weight in the back if you are going to put the sway bars to any actual use. These cars need rear bias, as does just about any performance car. Low and on the right are certainly valid arguments. But the rear is where I search for grip. If there needed to be more weight up front, FFR could have moved the engine two feet forward and made lots of leg room. However, they pushed it as far back as they could.

In 8 years, I have had to get to the battery precisely ONE time. That was to put a new one in. There is a hole in the bottom of the box. You use a jack and a piece of wood and it comes right out. Batteries also don't like heat. To be fair, heavier cables aren't a bad idea when coming form the rear.

I have a MKIV, 3-link, FFMetals box and a DIY drop trunk.
