Hey y’all. Need some opinions. Originally I was going to paint my body, frame, rear suspension, firewall, motor details(supercharger, intake tube, coil covers) motor all yellow. The front suspension was going to be silver, wheels, grill and windsheild frame silver. The more I think, the more I feel this is a bit imbalanced. I thought about painting the front suspension arms yellow but now I feel like that is a lot of yellow. So, how, I’m thinking about doing the frame, both front and rear suspension, wheels, grill and windshield silver, the body, firewall and motor and details details yellow. Some brackets will get “bye bye black”, things that I don’t want any attention to but I don’t want it to take on the bumblebee look. All my hoses are black nylon braided etc. Interior and top are tan. Oh, and fuel door will be silver.

So, opinions please. How would you break it up? What would you paint what, to balance out the color and contrast?

I don’t currently envision any stripes or silver on the body unless there is just too much yellow. Then I might do the body belt line silver. But I really think I want it very slick smooth all yellow.

If it helps, the boydster 2 is the influence for this car. I’ve loved it since I first saw it except for a few details that I’ve corrected in my version.

Thanks! PFA

Me, if I had the the option I'd do the engine block and the body the same colour. IMO painting the grille surround, mirrors and windshield posts is something done to make them "blend in" and get that (what I call) "smooth Boyd-era" look. Along those lines I also think that more laid back windshield posts and modern style mirrors is more appropriate to the concept.

But that's just me, you need to do what makes you happy!

P.S. A red pinstripe might look sharp. You could test drive the idea with a tape stripe first to see if you like it.

Thanks earl! What color would you do the frame?

I like silver, but again, that's just me.

I've ordered my Speedstar kit with the frame bare and will be getting it powder coated silver. Cliche but the body will be Ford Candy Apple red as a tribute to my late brother, that was the colour of his pride and joy, a 67 Mustang.

The one deviation from my previous recommendation is that I went with black for the engine block as It was all I could get during COVID. The distributor cap and wires are red though, LOL.

Probably going the same silver colour for the firewall and then black for the stuff that bolts to it.

I did an Elenore mustang convertible in yellow. Used lime green pin strips between the black rally strips and the yellow. Came out way better than I thought it would. How I determined the color is the pin stripper pulled several colors. Then you can see each on your car and you can decide what you like. Then you have the option to have nothing at if you do not like the look.

Silver is great for frames, it's something different. I did my 55 F100 frame in silver.

Thanks for all the opinions guys.

I just have to come to terms that no matter what color I do, I don’t think anyone is going to walk up and say “wow, you should have painted x part this color!” Lol. I expect to get the “yellow? Seriously?” But it’s my project and I’ve always envisioned yellow.

Very true, and this is where I become a little pricky when nay-sayers walks up to one of my vehicles I've restored / built if I'm at a show or a cars for coffee type event and starts the old "you should have done this...." or "I would have done that...." or starts criticizing the work, I just cut them off cold and ask to see the car they restored or in this case the kit car they built from the ground up and they normally just walk away embarrassed because they know they haven't. There is always one of them in every crowd. Not sure if it's jealousy or if they are living vicariously through the car owners but it's annoying.

This is your ride (a very sweet looking ride by the way), you're building it for you and no one else. If someone has an issue with the color, or the engine or the interior, etc., ask to see the car they painted or built. :D

Keep up the great work

My take is that most of the "car show critics" have never built a car for themselves and thus have no idea how personally invested its creator is in the result.

I believe that comments like "you should have done this" and "why did you do that" come more from a place of just not thinking rather than insult.

Me personally I go to a car show purposely expecting not to see a car done exactly the way I would do it, but I do expect to see some aspect of every car that I would do, or at least admire.

Maybe the best answer to those critics might be "Oh really? Why do you say that?" Maybe that will start them thinking about how negative they are coming across.

Earl

P.S. Svtfreak You're the only one who has to look at and drive your car every day, so do it the way YOU want it to be.

Also on the subject of workmanship, if anybody complains to me about that they are going to get the curt answer "I did the best I could with the time, finances and skills I had available", and leave it at that.

I went with yellow with black engine side cover vents and some black on the running board step plates.
I just bought an airbrush so I may do the belt line silver to match the interior of the car.
Now if I can just finish painting the body…..

Not a Factory Five but thought I would add my 2 cents on colour combos.

172259

Bottom is House of Kolor mango candy. Top is actually a solid Isuzu blue. Interior is saddle and blue to try and match the exterior. Underside of the body and fenders are candy, the fame is candy. motor, trans, diff and calipers are blue. All the bright work is polished aluminum except the grill which is steel. Car looks great from underneath. Car was originally painted in 2009 but I've had several panels and components redone over the last several years. Scott

Thanks everyone for the comments and opinions and advice. I think the “do it your way” reinforcement helped me quit thinking about what other may think about the color combo and how I split it up.

I think I’m going to go silver frame, front and rear suspension, grill and windsheild. Yellow firewall, blower, valve covers, motor and intake. Silver wheels to match the frame etc. I think that’ll break up the yellow, especially when side covers are off, and minimize the “bumblebee” look from the black stuff (hoses, wire loom etc).

I just need to decide, now, if I do the grill surround yellow and the slats silver, or the whole thing silver. Matter of opinion. I like them both. All silver def would be easier.
