View Full Version : Question regarding stock Ford PS
I have a hydroboost PS unit, stock Ford. A year ago, before I took it in for paint, the power steering was working just fine. I had done the spring modification to cut down on the assist level. Now I've got it back, and the power steering pump is making noise, the typical grinding, and it is purging PS fluid out. Any ideas as to what might be going on? I just got it back this afternoon, so I haven't had a chance to check anything out like fluid level, etc. I just know it was making a lot more noise than it was before.
Anyhow, any possible causes that I could check out would be helpful. Thanks
Oh, and I'll put up some pictures of the paint as soon as I can. All I can say is that Ken lived up to his reputation!

Any chance the PS hoses to the rack got reversed by mistake?
I'll double check that Alan, but it was working fine when I was running in gel coat last year. Just can't figure what might have gone wrong.

If the hoses were on wrong the steering wheel will shake all over the place. Violently!
Sounds like it has air in the system. Maybe they disconnected a hose for some reason and it hasn't had a chance to bleed the air out. Top the fluid up and turn the wheel back and forth with it running and it will probably settle down as the air works it's way out.
Steno, well it isn't doing that, so I figure the hoses are still plumbed correctly.
Bob, that could be the issue. I'll give that a shot tomorrow. I did notice that the fluid was foaming up a bit, and it hasn't done that since I burped it last year.

I also have Hydroboost but GM and had a similar issue out of the blue, grinding noise, puking PS oil.
I did multiple fluid purges, but oil turned dark very very quick evry time.
Long story short, I installed a PS fluid cooler and that didn't help much, ended replacing the PS pump and all is good now.
