Using stock 302 / T-5 with carb, when shifting into first, the car takes of like a bat out of hell? What do you think is up ?

What's Up >>>-------------------> It's A Factory Five!
The horse power to weight ratio is and always will be the key to going fast.

What GoDadGo said. Have you ever driven a very light car with a V8 before. I call it FUN!

Question are tapping the throttle and easing into it or just punching it? Where does the idle sit when you are in neutral? Before I agree with the above just want to make sure you aren't getting the thing lurching on you based on a high idle.

Watch this video from a pair of well known car enthusiasts and you'll grasp what you are building.
Ironically, the Type-65 in this video sports a Blue Print 306-SBF with a T-5 transmission.
The driving impression of these fellows is what Factory Five Guys already know.
Our cars are raw, responsive, and often faster than we thought they'd be.

+1 on the idle speed question... that can make a big difference to the seat of the pants feel.
For reference, a 2004 911 Turbo lugs around about 8.5 lbs per horsepower at the flywheel. If your car is 2400 lbs, that same experience can be had for only 280 horsepower. You likely only need around 250 hp to match a base 911 from that year.

It could also depend on whether or not you are using a racing clutch. Racing clutches grab very quickly so it’s not like you’re easing into first gear. I used a quartermaster racing clutch with an aluminum flywheel when I first built my Mark III and the car was very jerky in traffic. Especially at low speeds in first gear. Once I changed out to a nice street clutch and put the steel flywheel back on everything smoothed and the car was very well behaved at low speeds.

Yes its a racing clutch, my MK4 had a stock clutch and much more forgiving. The idle is a bit high, I will look at that also. Going into reverse is just as quick. Thanks guys
