View Full Version : "Voodoo Magic" SEMA Build - Day 42 - Done - Let's go to SEMA

Erik W. Treves

Well, we are going to certainly need some voodoo - SEMA is the end of Oct. - beginning of Nov - I don't even have the first piece of the truck....but hang on - here we go... This will the be the new "stretched" cab version of the 35 truck with a Voodoo Motor and TKX tranny - ya know just a simple shop truck :) As always will document the build here so you can take a "quick" trip with me. I will do all the pictures as I am done each day - this go around I might see if I can also add in some video and planning for each day.... I seemed to asked the question every time I see you guys on how I get done so fast... so maybe I can show some of that "live" and you can see what my recipe is and what works for me. Not saying it is the best method and I certainly don't stop and smell the roses as I go....

I will start tomorrow with what I have already done in prep for this build and I am pretty sure that most will be surprised on what isn't on the list.... :)

So far we are on track 9-10 weeks to heading out to SEMA and the kit isn't even on the way - seems about right -

Combat Gear - check
New gloves - check
Tool Batteries charging - check
Work bench cleaned - ummm .... "pending"
Start Pestering Wayne Presley for ideas and parts - check

Work bay clear of Wife's car to be set outside in the Alabama Summer Sun - will take her out for Dinner this weekend - check

more to follow tomorrow with actual details -

Will need to start a pool for when first start on the Voodoo engine will be....

ready, steady........ GO!

Erik -- Looking forward to this build. Not just because I know it will be epic. But also very interested in seeing the new stretched truck. Good luck with the timeline. Wouldn't work with my snail's pace. But I'm sure you're up for it.

According to Google maps it's a 26 hour drive from Huntsville to Las Vegas.

So that means the 35 has to leave the morning of Oct 31st at the very latest.

That's 67 days starting tomorrow morning...

No major updates. .. had to work all day....

I did order brake lines that are a little easier to work with
and with the Eastwood flare tool.. it's definitely cheating.
I also just found a link on how to adapt a ford control pack to a voodoo engine....hopefully that was good find and it works.
Discussed a plan on how the painter can still make schedule ... the critical part is door fitment and power window operation....

We landed on that he will start on the bed while I mount cab and get the doors fitted.... then get him the body.

Once he has all the body pieces will roll up the sleeves and get to drivetrain .

Will do hydraulic clutch so that decision is done
Wheel and tire are set as of today I believe

Quickly marking prep items off the list....

I'm in Huntsville too! Where are yall located and can I come by and see the work and possibly sit in the truck cab? I've been trying to figure out if I can fit in one or not and I don't think anyone else around here actually has FFR's truck? I was hoping to be the first, but you beat me to it :)

Well, if you don't mind me coming by sometime, you can let me know through the thread or shoot me a PM please?

No real updates - truck hasn't arrived as of this morning ---- but I understand it is now on the way and the hands of Superman - The Honey Badger as he is known by many. Will be good to catch up with him. All parts are sitting in "shopping carts" and "wish lists" - so as soon as I see what's there are what isn't - will hit the BUY button and drive on. For sure what I know I am missing is the rear axle and wheels and tires... fortunately there are 352 other things that can get done.. I have the the flare tool out and in the vise along with the brake line I use... I have 4 brand new 9/64 drill bits a tube of urethane for the aluminum... I just bought all the fluids for the car as well- so that's done... filled the fridge in the garage with drinks and other things. I also spoke to me Painter/coater - he is all set and has plenty of powder on hand - will plan on having everything in his hands on Tuesday. ... anyway more to follow this weekend!

Day one complete - will probably do my normal late night "small stuff" stuff while everyone is sleeping...

Bed is on, gas tank in, everything went to the coaters, firewall fitted and sent off and wilwood assy installed.

overall not a bad way to start.... did my inventory using the manual - really missed the packing list - funny you don't realize how much you use it until you don't have it - and I believer this kit was packed under the "new" system - so some of the boxes got re-numbered (nobody likes change I know) - but overall it wasn't that bad - gotta say. Nothing damage either. Anyway - I could type this all out - but man I was flying around the truck today - Wayne would have had fun with me as tried to see both sides of the truck at the same time trying to get the gaps on the bed all right....but it's all square.... anyway I did a post day 1 video - hopefully this approach is better than the typical novel and still pictures....

Is there anything you can’t do??
I have no idea how you can take care of your, “day job”, family, all of life’s daily surprises AND build this truck within the given time frame. On top of everything else, you’re making videos of your process and progress for the community to learn from or simply enjoy watching. Incredible.
Best of luck! (But I know you won’t need it)

Erik W. Treves
09-06-2022, 08:09 AM
Thanks Mark - well that list of things I can't do is quite long unfortunately ..... lol... ask Wayne about me and draining and filling cars with fluids..... anyway - just time management and planning in my sleep and in the down time.... i get pretty focused during these things which actually helps me mentally..... anyway - it appears someone got up early this morning and dry fit one door in the hole already...... guess I will have to do the other one after dinner....

I like to do it while the body is still kinda free to move around and so I can move the body to fit the shape of the door.... right now as it sits it appears to be flush all the way around... a good sign....so far...

Day 6 complete - long aggressive day - long video means I got a ton done! - we are basically ready to go to the body shop tomorrow.....have to load it up mid day tomorrow... I did the video a little differently this time (see what you think) - I did incremental videos for the steps along the way and then a recap video at the end - instead of just a recap... it's a longer video that way but it shows you some of the steps - might do a few like this - let me know which you prefer.

Erik,
I really enjoy following your videos. Thank you for taking the time to do them. Your attention to detail is well thought out. Just taking the time to rewire the engine makes a huge difference in the end appearance. That looks really clean even without the loom.
I do have a dumb question as I really like the truck with the larger cab. I have the idea of building one in a similar style to Henry R’s 33 with bomber seats and metal door inserts. I would like to use the OTB Gear 6 gauge bomber insert but the dash has the raised oval design. Would that area of the dash be able to be smoothed or would the whole dash have to be re-fabricated?
Respectfully,
Jeremie

Erik W. Treves
09-17-2022, 09:43 PM
The dash is just fiberglass....so yes it can be smoothed and then body work done to get the flat dash look

Hi Erik... I do have a few curious questions about this build.

Why is this build going to SEMA? Is it the extended cab, the engine, etc, i.e., what makes is special for SEMA? Is this build for a sponsor, another person, or yours? Lastly, what's the main drivers/requirements for this SEMA build that dictates what you end up doing?

Thanks Mark

I am fortunate enough to have been one of the BETA builders for the last 5 (6) kits that have been put out to the field - 289,Gen3 Daytona, 35 truck, F9, Speedstar, 35 extended truck...... I built the 289,Gen3 and first truck for myself - this one is for Factory Five - with the exception of the F9 they all to SEMA to be displayed in their booth. Hence "SEMA Build". I am not a Factory Five employee - just a guy who likes to put these cars together - The other thing with this specific build is that the truck kit was assembled and shipped to me under the "new" parts tracking system - so I guess I am Beta on that too :) . I have to detail the build and process back to FFR (and forums) - provide feedback so the that the when they go into production the process should go smoother. I already have the next build planned - FOR ME..... so that will be coming soon....... so stay tuned.

Erik, nice progress.

Some questions:
1. Could the headers have been installed on the engine out of the chassis and then lowered in? (this will help me on my build plan)
2. What size wheels (including offset) and tires used?
3. What size are the Stage 8 bolts (thread size and length)? Also, what style lock flange on the Stage 8, e.g., the tear drop lock flange or the crescent shape ones?

I'll reverse my motor mount bolts for header clearance..... Will you suggest to FF to add that to there install manual? Is there enough room for header glass wrap?

1. Could the headers have been installed on the engine out of the chassis and then lowered in? (this will help me on my build plan)

I would just plan on installing the headers as you put the engine in - like normal full length header installs the headers are just laying in the engine compartment as you place the engine in

2. What size wheels (including offset) and tires used?

255/45/18's Toyo's - not sure on the wheel spacing but FFR is pretty consistent with the 6.5 BS since it's all mustang stuff - running 1.5 spacer in the back

3. What size are the Stage 8 bolts (thread size and length)? Also, what style lock flange on the Stage 8, e.g., the tear drop lock flange or the crescent shape ones?

Tear drop spacers - I just went on Summit and looked up coyote header bolts

I'll reverse my motor mount bolts for header clearance..... Will you suggest to FF to add that to there install manual? Is there enough room for header glass wrap?

Yes there is room to put header wrap - as far as reversing the mounts.... anything is possible I suppose - the motor mounts only bolt to the block one way on the coyote - the brackets can be reversed - but then you would need a new driveshaft and I am not sure how you would do the lower radiator hose - the crank pulley will be VERY close to the steering rack, you will need another transmission mount as well for the chassis. The exhaust bends will be in the wrong places - so those would need to be redone as well. So basically it would seem to me on the back of the napkin planning that this wouldn't be as simple as flipping motor mounts - it's a full custom install.... I am not afraid of it myself - but one would need to go into this plan eyes wide open... in the end the current FFR headers fit - but it's your build plan and FFR gives you 2 doors to walk through - book build or custom build.... I rarely walk through the book build door myself....

On the last item.... I wan ONLY referring to reversing the bolts as I noted, i.e., the bolts enter the mount from the rear side with the nuts on the front side to give more room between bolt head and header.

Thanks Mark

10-03-2022, 09:22 AM
Thanks for the clarification......I would not do that since removing the bolt would require the header to come off - and I put the headers on before the mounts - so it isn't possible - there is room - it's just close - as long as it doesn't touch it's good - you could change the nut type and go to a metal lock nut versus as nylon lock nut - they tend to be shorter and narrower...

Hi Erik,

Really enjoying the video series.

Day 25 question

In between the topside and underside aluminum sheets, FF still has the insulation sheets? Reason for me asking is on my 35 order they wrote a note saying "no longer available".

Thanks again for the video documentation.

I am tracking your question from the thread you started on that topic... there was another insulation with the old floor - I am also going to guess that that is what is discontinued since mine came with the sandwich construction floor as did Paul's truck which is the non-stretched version.

I think it really needs an X-pipe - and I think the chambered mufflers need to be swapped out... but I think it sounds good in real life- -I imagine at 8000 RPM it will sound amazing.

On my '35 build, I'll install the H pipe. I like the sound better and it's suppose to help increase torque at lower RPMs.... at least that's what I've read and experienced in past builds (although they weren't Coyote engines)

Regarding the X pipe…I remember talking to Jim Schenck about the flat plane engines in a roadster or Coupe and his comment was “If you exhaust the right bank and left bank separately through individual sidepipes without a crossover pipe it’ll sound like 2 fart can Honda’s going down the road” :)

Hi Erik.... sounds better for sure. I'm thinking of going with an "H" pipe crossover vs "X".

Three questions:
1. Did you consider the "H" pipe crossover?
2. Why did you choose the "X" pipe crossover?
3. Is the FF exhaust 2.5" diameter?

Thanks Mark

Erik W. Treves
10-16-2022, 07:00 AM
Jeff - I am not sure the cable will go over the exhaust with enough clearance for the rebound - I need to add some supports to the rear of the muffler to keep it from dropping. If I angle the muffler up a bit I end up with tons of room... so I will just add a couple metal straps today while I am letting the water drain out of it for the thermostat housing change. I am happy about the way it sounds and was in a rush to hear it yesterday...

Mark - the GT350 sound in the OEM car is an X-pipe... and we all love how that sounds... that's what drove the decision

Sounds much better Erik, can't wait to see the painted cab!

Couple of quick questions if you can:
- any vendor part number info on the x pipe upgrade to the exhaust
- looks like you upgraded the wire gauge on the battery cable to the front (much heavier gauge that I got in the '33 kit at least), what did you go with?
- also looks like you added a negative/ground wire instead of using chassis, correct? gauge?

Thx!!

The X-pipe is a universal Stainless X-pipe from summit.

The whole battery cable deal is me and "history" with troubleshooting issues I had in years past and repeated approach to use the smallest battery I can... With the fuel injected cars and typically the ECU it is still amazing to me that the ground can play such a huge part of how well the car runs... to that end I really over engineer it I think ... but I am running "easy bend" 0/1 battery cables - you can find them anywhere - amazon for example has some excellent kits.... I do run a dedicated power and ground to the starter and the starter bolt - this grounds the engine, ECU, Battery and Starter all to the same source..... I then run RF harness from the starter and then ground that to the frame. I also run a small ground from the engine to the chassis to service anything that needs a ground that isn't the ECU or starter.... For the starter circuit I do not use the chassis any more... it works... but have decided to do it this way for several builds now.

First, I agree with Erik totally.... I even go to another level, e.g, ground each head to the block and block to chassis. This ensures good ground for the spark plugs/ignition. I also run a ground from the alternator housing to one of the heads. Lastly, any place you can run some heavier gauge wire, e.g., Alternator to battery is always good (especially for the long runs for the trucks (i.e., alt up front and battery in back. In this cast, you can run the alt to the starter /battery lug).

Hey all - just wanted to provide feedback that we did get a 6'6" 320 lbs gentleman into the truck and he fit!

Somethings that we (I) could have done to make the truck bigger on the inside -

1) put an automatic in it
2) I had the pedals up off the front firewall a little too much (mainly so I could drive it) -
a. could have just adjusted them with the mater cylinder rod to lower them
b. goning to larger master cylinder size to reduce pedal throw (would increase effort but they are pretty soft now) - and the larger folks will have "more" mass pushing anyway... I believe the stock pieces are 3/4 bore

All in all everybody who tried to get in the truck was able to get in it.... most said the seat was too low and too far back - all goodness!

Mission Success from a design perspective I think!

To build on this response, my truck build is an LS3 with a GM 4L65E automatic. That's an older vintage trans and smaller than newer ones including the 6R80. It fit OK, but wouldn't want to go any bigger.

Not really relevant to the question, but my 2nd Gen Coyote and 6R80 did not fit in my 70 Mustang without tunnel surgery. The bellhousing area is very wide on the 6R80.
If you want, I can give you dimensions and pictures as my engine and transmission are currently out of the car.
If you can weld, you can make it fit.

Of course go for it if that's what you want to do. Anything's possible. My main caution is the foot space on the truck is already narrow. Widening the transmission tunnel, especially at the front by the bell housing, is going to make it even tighter. For driver with the pedals and also for the passenger.

Erik W. Treves
11-13-2022, 08:27 AM
I think it would "fit" - the issue of width on the 6R80 is only one aspect of the box - the 6R80 is also taller than the other boxes and wider in the hips... I don't think the foot box would be the issue rather the hour glass shape of the tunnel..... anything possible - and we can probably speculate some - but somebody has to be first :) - I think I was the first to put it in the coupe? I think even factory 5 said it was "probably" too big.... until you stuff it in there you won't know.... in my case I already had one to try.... and to say it "FITS" - well it does .... but just... and it takes a few modifications to get it in there so it's usable.... Paul is correct about the need to more than likely widen the tunnel - but I don't think that will effect the relationship between the gas pedal and your foot since that point is already the widest point of bellhousing mounts to the motor and if the transmission was any wider it wouldn't bolt to the engine.

Skuzzy
11-13-2022, 11:05 AM
I do have a 6R80 in the garage ready to go. I was going to use it in another project but have since decided to retire from building cars. I agree Erik. I do not think it will shrink the foot box, at the pedals, as that should already be wide enough to handle the engine.

What size is the tubing in the tunnel? I assume it is square. Depending on how much more space is needed, it might be possible to unitize the tunnel by splitting the tubing and reinforcing it with 1/16" plate. That description may be a bit vague. Basically, split the tubing in the tunnel and then take a sheet of 1/16" plate and weld it the length of the tunnel to restore the strength lost. If the tubing is 1.5" square, then that could gain 1.375" in the width of the tunnel with zero change to the interior.

About 12" from the bellhousing mounting face the tunnel to be 11" wide/high. How far off is that? That first 12" is a linear taper from the width of the engine to about 10.25".
