Got my first snake bite. I felt a similar kind of childish pride when I got my first speeding ticket... but that one hurt a lot less.

That's all.

I actually keep a welding blanket in the car to cover the pipes so my wife won't get bit.
It's all part of the experience of owning a legend.
Now put some Aloe on it.

Never burned myself on my own car but have had 3 pretty good ones working on others…including on my forehead (don’t ask :( )

Everyone had a comment.

I’ve had four. Two without shields and two with shields. Slow learner I guess, but what I need to remember is that when close to something on the driver’s side, stepping further aft will put your leg near the tip where there is no shield.

Side pipes are simultaneously wonderful and a terrible idea:confused:

drummer mike's heat shields make a significant difference. I've been able to put my hand directly on the shield after a drive and only feels moderately warm. The tips and elbow of the pipes are a different story. I tell all my passengers to stand on the seat with both feet prior to trying to sit down, and reverse the process to get out.

I really like the welding blanket idea for the bride and one of my kids. My oldest has special needs and she's a tiny thing. I'm a long way from completion, but I've already been thinking about how to keep the bride and my oldest from getting the snake bite. I could care less if my other two kids or I get one as it will just be a self correcting experience.

I'm sorry Jeff but I have to ask about this one.

HOW?

Although I have the heat shields,,,For the passenger side, I have a welders blanket sewn in to a circle. Used a slightly larger diameter can (than exhaust tip) that easily slips over the tip. Both ends are left un sewn for ease of putting it on and off. Made a one inch hem to hold on to.

No shields and no burns (so far). Not having doors seems to solve the issue. It creates other issues however!

I've had numerous "snake bites" over the years with various reasons why (all just not thinking!) but the absolute worst was on my Daytona coupe. I noticed a rubber smell, stopped the car and got down on the ground to look under then stupidly grabbed the header pipe ahead of the muffler with my bare hand. That was probably 15 years or more ago and I still carry a significant scar on my right hand.

I have Drummer Mikes heat shields but not installed yet. Here is his ph#586-944-5380. His name is Mike Francuck. M49Francuck@hotmail.com I have heard that he was stopping production recently but never confirmed it.

I too have a welding blanket. Although I have the heat shields,,,,the exhaust tips are still exposed. I had my wife sew the blanket in a diameter slightly larger than the exhuast tip diameter. Primarily for the passenger since I use the steering wheel for balance to exit. The blanket has a one inch hem to hold onto the blanket when you slide it on prior to exiting. I call it a condom. LOL LOL. It is for protection!!!!!

It's not just the burns. I got against a sidepipe tip on one in the shop the other day and it sliced me open like a knife. Bled like the proverbial stuck hog until I made a quick ER visit for 6 stitches...

After a couple of "bites" I installed heat shields. Big improvement and I like they way they look as well.

I have to share my snake bite story. I run an engine dyno in my shop all the time, so I should know better. Was working on an engine(running) and had to stand between the headers. Needless to say I leaned against one of the collectors. What do you do when burn your leg? Jump back, right? Well there is a header on the other side which I quickly found. So, now I'm bouncing back and forth like a pinball..It took a while for that to heal!

My passengers still got burned by the exposed pipe tip, even after installing Drummer Mike's shields. I bought a carbonized welding cloth 18" x 18" from Amazon, and velcroed it to the carpet. Unrolling it to cover the sidepipe tip. 184099184100

Warned my brother numerous times about how hot the pipes get and to be careful getting out, he was so careful that he ended up getting a 3rd degree on his leg
