has anybody else have a ridiculous time trying to pull in the 1/2-20 lug nut studs for the IRS hubs on a mk4? i froze them and it still seems way to hard. i've replaced studs before and they were never this tight, thanks

Yes!!! I took mine to be pressed in by a machine shop. It was the best $20 I ever spent.

I just did mine this weekend. Used a ball joint press.

I pressed the old ones out and new ones in using a hydraulic press. For easy, you can't beat a press or taking them to a shop that can press them!

Another tact is to buy 10 lug nuts that fit the existing studs. They aren't interchangeable rear to front, but neither are the wheels/tires. And you're not reusing the compromised interference (press) fit.

Except you may then need two different sized sockets in your trunk.

And you better hope you never get them mixed up...

haak60, go search the web for: ABN Wheel Stud Installer. The bearing tool is around $20 buxs + shipping. I had the same issue with getting mine to play nice and seat correctly. With this bearing tool - it's butter! You might want to grind/file your stud heads, prior to installation? As they will seat a little better and fit the curvature of the wheel hub.

I used the ABN installer with a washer and lug nut. Worked great. Bought it from Walmart. The installer is actually a bearing that eliminates the friction of the nut riding on the washer. Makes pulling them in a piece of cake.

I also ground down an edge of the new stud to clear the hub.

i actually have the same ball joint press as slarson and did it that way, still a pain in the *** because you cant get the press square on the stud had to start with lug nut enough where it was pulled in square then switched to press. thanks for the ideas
