For those of you using something black for your shifter can you post pics? I can get the Tremec but thought I'd ask in case there's something a little cooler out there.

I used a USMC knob but unfortunately it already started to sun fade. The red in the background is already turned orange.
This is plan B

Now I like that one. Too bad the Devil Dog one faded, that's not allowed by the Commandant!
As a side note, have you measured the size of the FFR shifter yet?
I bought a solid stainless steel knob from this place:

This is what I'm running that feels great in my hand, does not get hot and gives great grip.

It is a rather understated shifter ball option that works well in the Redbone Roadster.

If I recall, the thread size needed is 3/8 x 24.

I just use a machine knob from McMaster-Carr. They have a variety of threads, sizes, materials and colors. Many are $3-5. Built the shifter lever too.

Great resource! I just looked and they have a stainless steel (1-7/8" ball with 3/8 x 24 threads) for a fraction of what I paid. It isn't polished, but that's not hard to remedy.

I used the free ball with transmission purchase through Forte. Could paint it with Por 15 black.

Papa,
Just a word of caution. A stainless shift ball is going to get real hot in the sun.
I branded myself with one and that was in a GT40. I would expect it to be worse in a roadster.
The solution is a rag or similar over the knob when parked in the sun.
Glad you like the collection of cheap knobs at McMaster.

I bought a bag of 2" diameter hardwood balls from Michael's Craft store, drilled a hole in it, and screwed it onto the shift lever. You can buy them on ebay, 5 for $13.59. You can paint them any color you like. I painted one black, one yellow and one clear lacquer. You can let your kids paint them up personal and fancy. It's just a knob.

Did the color thing, but they also do black. There was a wide variety of colors & diameters. Company's main business is pool balls so theses have a nice weight to them.

I remember a guy in high skool who's daddy bought him a new '69 396 black ragtop Chevelle (cowl induction and Hurst-4 of course). Had a black pool 8-ball for the knob. He opined, "If you need a shift pattern engraved or otherwise so imparted on your knob top to keep you honest, you don't need to be driving anything with a clutch".
haven't personally used, but this looks interesting

@BEAR-AvHistory, where did you get that pool ball knob? I never thought of going that route and having one custom engraved like that. Would you share how much it cost?

IIRC it was $63 dollars. They sold the base black ball. I got a 2" custom one. The color, engraved shift pattern & the engraved snake were each options. Came with your choice of screw thread pitch so there was no adaptor. Mine was cut for the 3rd party 427 style stick. Was told by one of the guys recently that they don't carry the logos anymore (had 30 or so for most cars) but will put one on it you supply it. Don't know how that works.
Will see if I still have the receipt so you can get to the correct store.
EDIT:
EPCO Shift Knobs - Unknown currant price or snake - mine is over 6 years old.
Billetworx $100 with snake - Unknown quality
