Posting this for those of you that are struggling with the idea that great cars can be powered by electricity. 7:33 is just an obscenely fast lap time!

I've never been a Tesla fan. Someone once described Teslas as "cars for people that hate cars", and I think that fits pretty well. However, we've been wanting to go EV for our primary driver for a while. About a year ago, we decided to go test drive a Porsche Taycan, and were just blown away by how good a car it is. Despite the fact that it doesn't make the "vroom vroom" noises, it's the best car I've ever driven - by a large margin. After waiting 13 months for ours to arrive (gotta love supply chain issues) we've had it now for several weeks, and it just blows my mind how good it is every single time I drive it.

I realize that we have a long way to go on charging infrastructure, but in California at least there are enough charging stations available already that I can get to wherever I need to go comfortably, and there are more stations coming online literally every day.

So... if you can't possibly imagine enjoying an EV: go check out some of the current offerings. Personally, I think our collective automotive future holds plenty of promise.

That is unbelievably quick. The Taycan of one can afford is top notch EV.

that thing is humming along. not much room between the pavement and guardrail, esp at that speed!

Tesla or Porsche at the same price point...easy decision.

Congrats on the car. I'm not ready for an EV yet, but I'm not a hater either. I just need it to make sense for my location first and we aren't there yet.

John, startling acceleration 100-200. Then I see 250 and realize this is metric. Still startling, but credit where credit is due, that is an incredible driver with skills and courage.

Thanks. This post wasn't intended to be a Tesla vs. Porsche thread - totally agree on price points. Tesla has been working on their economies of scale for over a decade. When they first started, they rolled out an expensive, high-margin car and used the profits from that to fund the development of other models and build the scale needed to make more affordable cars. Most other manufacturers are only at that point now. Porsche (Taycan) and Mercedes (EQS), for example, are just now dipping their toes in the EV market with a splashy, expensive car that they're using to fund the development of several other models over the next few years.

Mostly, the point I'm making is that we're finally moving beyond the point where EV's are silly little clown cars and are genuinely great cars in their own right. And we haven't even scratched the surface yet.

Jim - yes, startling is a good word for the acceleration. I haven't had a chance to try launch control yet as I haven't found a road near me that's straight and secluded enough that it won't land me in jail but even just rolling on the throttle "enthusiastically" on freeway onramps things start to get blurry in a hurry.

Very impressive for an EV. I'll take the hybrid, LOL.

Wow! Yeah, nearly 230mph on the back straight is just bonkers.

The issue with EV's at the moment is thermal management of the batteries and motors, and so they all cap top speeds at the moment to keep them from going in to 'limp home' mode. As thermal management becomes better, expect to see higher top speeds and faster lap times for the EV's.

I had a test drive in a "turbo" model not the "S" and was able to try launch control a few times. Put your head on the head rest because if you don't it will be there.... hard. My son did the on-line marketing at a Porsche dealer and he found you can't keep a go pro mounted on the car and use launch control. It was amazing to drive and a great car, expensive as all Porsches are.

Remember the speeds are in km not MPH so multiply by .62 to convert into MPH. so 230 km is just over 140 MPH

He was hitting nearly 370kph on the back straight  (referring to the 919 hybrid Evo)

Slower than my daily driver sedan 6 years ago, almost 3x the price, and even with 50% more power. Not impressed just yet but I assume eventually I will be. Battery power density is the biggest thing holding these back, 5100 lb curb weight is just atrocious for this kind of car.

Your daily driver sedan six years ago could do 0 to 60 faster than 2.5 seconds?

 Sorry I thought this post was about Nurburgring times. Yes, many cars and SUVs, including electric, are much quicker to 60 than my daily.
