I have an older MK1 and its starting to get some pitting and rust on the side pipes. I want to re-ceramic coat them. How hard is it to take the side pipes off for this? Any tips or instructions lying around?
Thanks guys/gals
Assume you have 4 into 4 headers, just disconnect the hanger from the pipe and then the four bolts at the header flange. These may be a challenge if deformed nuts were used (likely). Pay attention to the orientation of any spacers or wedges so you can install them the same way they are currently installed. Get new gaskets or use copper RTV to seal them when you reinstall them.

Abomination,
Are you removing the J-pipes as well? If so, pay close attention on reassembly to get a good seal. If you’re running EFI and your 02 sensor is in the J-pipe, it will effect the readings.
Other than that, the removal is straight forward. Bolt on the hangar under the body and three bolts at the flange. You might have a time finding a triangle gasket though.
Good luck
