View Full Version : I didn't see this one coming

So I’m driving on the interstate this afternoon and all of a sudden start feeling warm air blowing on my elbow. I figured my transmission tunnel vent (which is useless by the way) must have opened up. But that didn’t make sense since the vent normally blows hot air on my shin and this was my right elbow. So I start fiddling around trying to find where the hot air is coming from and I stick my hand in the hole where my cup holder should be. And what does my finger discover? The tip of my finger brushed the rotating drive shaft U-joint. Let me tell you, that will wake you up! Luckily I came away with only a dirty fingertip. Apparently after twenty years the tolerances of the press fit cup holder loosened up and it blew out of its hole. When I installed them I never considered that there would be enough air pressure to blow them out of place. I’m planning on installing a tie-wrap or maybe a hose clamp on the underside of the cup holders to keep them from popping out in the future. So just a reminder: It’s the stuff that you never consider that will rip your finger off.

Yikes glad it ended with all the fingers still attached!

On the plus side, it's easy to check at least one pinion angle.

Glad your fingers are intact.

I had the exact thing happen to me. Doing 80+ on I75 and a flash of something off to my right caught my eye. I look over and down, and see the drive shaft and U-joint spinning like a be-atch through the now empty cup holder hole.
You forget how close your body is to a lot of very fast moving parts in these cars.

Which is why I'm adamant about incorporating a flexplate shield, transmission shield and a driveshaft loop into my build if at all possible.

There is a surprising amount of pressure in that tunnel. It somehow seperated my vinyl from the cover.

That's why I don't drive naked!

I'm not sure where you were going with this but I believe egchewy79's advice could apply to any appendage.:)
