View Full Version : Loading a car onto an enclosed trailer

I need to load the car onto an enclosed 7x16 trailer with folding ramp. Car is drivable but the exhaust is off. Headers with cats are on the car. Coyote motor. What are my options - to drive the car up. Not sure if there will be sparks / fire. Or do I need to push it up the somehow? Jr. is a football player in High School but I am afraid we don't have enough manpower to push the car onto the trailer's ramp.

Any ideas? Car is going to a body shop to get bodywork fitted.

Sparks / fire? From what? Other than it being loud with an open exhaust, no reason you can't drive it in. I drive my cars both in and out of our Serpent Express all the time. Get it lined up perfectly straight and centered at the beginning of the ramps. Then just drive it in and out straight with little/no correction.

Cool deal, just never ran a car without the silencers. I can handle loud

Find ear plugs.

Yeah no issue driving it up with open headers. But a 7 ft wide enclosed trailer is pretty narrow, going to be tight getting out of the car.

Yep, drive it in. If the tailgate ramp has cables that run up to an overhead spring watch them closely because they are usually set in a bit. And yeah, as Michael said if the trailer doesn't have a large driver's side door you'll have to exit the car by crawling across the trunk!

What Jim said, and you might want to put head phones on over the plugs. 105dB in an enclosed area will hurt your ears badly (and maybe permanently) in a very short time.

Agree with all - drive it in, no problem but do wear earplugs. It'll be loud enough to damage hearing (and wake up neighbors for several blocks around you).

In reality a Coyote with cats is relatively quiet at low speeds. Certainly not 105 dB!

You want to learn about loading a car in a trailer? Talk to our buddy rich grsc. There’s no pu$$yfooting around when he’s putting one in!

It's all about timing-----50ft starting run, then slamming the brakes to slide to a stop just as the front wheels touch the wheel chocks.
Guess you didn't forget my load up at the shop, did ya.;):p Don't be a kitty-cat loading them up.

My preference is a winch or come a long. If the engine is not running properly, exhaust flames can happen
It the driver is not experienced, trailer decks are slippery, and over run can happen.
What you are suggesting is an amateur maneuver, pros never do it that way.

Interesting. I’ve been loading race and street cars for 30+ years and the only times they get winched in is if they aren’t self starting (sprint cars and midgets) or broken.

X2 Jeff. Your response is more diplomatic than mine. Which I ended up deleting.

3X, I didn't respond, as I am not now, or ever have been a diplomat.

Might I assume you guys get your loading methodology from the FFR transport?

Although I am just an “amateur” I have in fact loaded cars onto the double deck FFR transporter at SEMA as well as at LCS (they were driven in by the way). Not sure what the old Dave Friedman photos of Shelby incidents from back in the 1960s have to do with FFR’s transporter…

Despite the emoji this thread has taken a dark turn. Time for a seemingly irrelevant story.

Not many years ago I was on a team running a 1954 Corvette roadster in LaCarrera Panamerica. This Carrera Panamericana Mexican sports car racing event started in Tuxtla Gutiérrez, Chiapas and finished in Zacatecas, Zacatecas. This edition was composed of seven day stages and one day of qualification.
On about day three one of the speed stages was climbing to a rural village at the top of a mountain near Puebla. We were staged everyday as #71 of 120 cars. The village had no parking so we had to hold position on main street until all the cars arrived and our staging number came up again to race back down the mountain. The street was steep cobblestone and the car would not hold position with the rear tires only, we had to stay in the car holding the brakes and roasting in the mid day sun. At least we had our helmets off. The local entertainment was the village dog pack, 12 or 13 mongrels of various size and color. They were intent on something. Many were in a state of arousal and obviously one female was in heat. The alpha male was running point. As the inevitable copulation began the onlookers were also unconstrained, hips pumping wildly thrusting into the air as they circled the breeding pair like merry-go-round.
What does this have to do with loading cars? Not much. Everyone enjoys an event in their own way.

That's what I do.....I was even accused of hitting second gear at the Texas event a couple of years ago.

It's all about the initial line-up. and having a good wheel stop.

Your son is on a HS football team.... have them come over for pizza and ......

"Oh, since you guys are here, can you guys help push my car into the trailer " ??

If it is not painted yet, this will be a good time to tune-up your procedure. If it gets scratched, no big deal, have the painter fix it, and then get a better plan put together.

Not to say this is the preferred or only way... but the car will be light compared to a finished car. I've push and helped push many finished Cobras into trailers. It's a 2 person job, 3 if you're a little tired.

This turned out to be a better thread than I expected.

One more question - will there need to be any need for any additional support to the ramp door. I believe dedicated car trailers have extra support, where normal utility trailers don't.
