View Full Version : Electric Fan Question?

I am curious as to the CFM the FFR supplied electric fan has. I am wanting to install a quieter fan and a fan that draws more CFM. Not really having an issue other than the noise. Any recommendations for a quieter, higher capacity fan?

Chance there are different fans provided at different times. Based on supply, etc. But FWIW, both my but 20th Anniversary Roadster and Gen 3 Coupe came with a DCM PN TA14R2002, 12 VDC, 160W, 1467 CFM, max draw 8.7 amps. Both Coyote builds. Both with shrouds. Both keep temps in good shape.

Another option is to install a PWM fan controller that has lower speed(s). There was a thread a while back about the Maradyne MFA136 Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) Fan Controller with temperature sensor. There are others. Installed the Maradyne in my Roadster. Mainly because the Coyote PCM kept the fan running practically all the time. Even when not needed. The controller provided the option to back it off without changing the PCM tune. But side benefit was it had a lower speed that you could program with it's own temperature range. Worked very well and was definitely quieter.

I'm not sure about noise, or upgrading it, but this is the fan that was provided in my kit.

I wonder if just swapping to the non-low-profile thicker S-Fan would be quieter? I don't see any noise specs on their website.

I took the same approach because of fan noise. I initially installed the Maradyne MFA136, but unfortunately it didn't last long and trying to get a warranty replacement was challenging to say the least. I suspect my experience was the exception, as most seem to have had good experiences with the Maradyne controller. I ended up installing an AutoCool NB50 which is also a PWM controller. I really like it. It functions the same way the Maradyne unit does, but it has more fan speed intervals (Maradyne does 50% and 100%) and seems to be very well built. When the fan comes on, I don't even hear it. It also has an over-ride switch circuit to bypass the fan controller and run the fan at full speed. The downsides of the AutoCool is that is it a fair bit bigger than the Maradyne unit, cost more, and requires more real estate to mount. Good luck.

You can hear the fan with the engine running?

Absolutely. Has it ever bothered me? No. But obviously others don’t feel the same.

I went with the Flex-A-Lite fan as per recommendation of Fman and others, pulls more CFM and is quieter due to vane design all at the same amperage

Electric Fan, Puller, Flex-Wave, Single, 16 in. Diameter, 3,000 cfm, Black, 18.50 amps

essentially the same size fan, but the Flex-A-Lite pulls more CFM at the same amperage

If you're interested in the PWM fan controller I wrote that install up (https://thefactoryfiveforum.com/showthread.php?30668-GTBradley-s-build-a-caution-to-4-post-Bendpak-owners&p=389136&viewfull=1#post389136) some time ago. It sure quietened my down and has worked well for almost 11,000 miles now.

It works for any engine, not just the Coyote.

Interesting. I have mine on PWM, water temp never gets over 206F which is still low fan speed I think still 50% so I guess I just never get to notice it at full blast.

The FFR provided fan move a lot of air which I really like, as coolant temp drops pretty quickly when it's switched on. Great for our more mountainous roads.
The sound I believe is from the fan itself because of the blade pitch, not so much the fan motor. I can hear it switch on if sitting at a light at idle, but once I'm rolling I don't notice it at all.

Second this - I have the exact same fan in my Cobra and my '54 Chevy 3100 - works great and is not too loud IMO. I also use an aluminum shroud for both applications.

I hear the fan come on, always at a long stop light, and you hear it sitting still but not at speed. Outside the car it almost drowns out the engine idling. It cools well and will shut off and cycle while sitting a long time. I just don't like the noise. I am about to do a motor change and would like to change it out at that time if I can find a quieter unit. Thanks for the input so far.

This reminds me of the Harley crowd, with some people complaining about random engine noises because their bike isn't as quiet as the Goldwing they traded in. The answer was always, "You need a louder exhaust..."

IMO, any fan running at 50% is going to be quieter than even the quietest fan running at 100%. If cutting fan noise is the objective, I think your money is better spent on one of the aforementioned PWM fan controllers rather than a new fan.

+1 for the Flex-a-lite 3000 CFM. This fan has been doing a great job keeping my 427 at 180 even in 90+ degree weather. You can't hear it running when idling, it is much quieter than the FFR fan. I have a friend with the FFR fan with a Coyote and can hear the fan running in his car when he is stopped behind me.
