View Full Version : One wheel Burnout????

Got my MK4 on the road about a month and finally drank up the courage to do a burnout. For some reason my left tire is the only one "leaving rubber". The rear end I have came right from Moser as part of my original Factory Five order......"Standard 8.8 Axle Housing w/3-link". I'm pretty confident I used the recommended Gear oil and Friction Modifier..... But heck that was two years ago when I serviced it and I would have followed the Moser manual for guidance. Any ideas or suggestions how to attack this issue? 825 miles driven. Thanks in advance.

If you jack up the back of the car so both wheels are off the ground, and spin one of the wheels, does the other side turn in the same direction or opposite?

opposite

If it goes opposite it is either an open differential or a faulty limited slip.

Thanks for the input. So it appears since Moser stated they do not sell "open differentials"....then I may have a faulty limited slip. ARGHHHHH

Interesting?? Jeff is correct but it's strange that is the left side doing the burnout? Engine torque usually has the right rear leaving the marks.

When you say left side do you mean driver side? Just a double check because 25 years as an auto tech and you would be surprised how many owners stood in front of their car looking at it and said the problem was on the left side - the passenger side.

what is the defacto description? left/right? driver/passenger? what perspective?
honestly I've been trying to order a part for my wife's Ford Focus and I've tried (and returned) 3x because what they described was the wrong side!

Industry accepted standard is "as sitting in the drivers seat". Left=drivers side and right=passenger side.

Just an update. Had some dialogue with Moser. Since I got this axle in May of 2020, my 2 year warranty expired. Good news is that they are sending me an entire carrier/posi unit at no charge. But no labor warranty (quoted $200 from local shop). Really not sure how fair that is since "we" are building a kit that takes (in my case) over 2 years to actually test the rearend. However, I do understand that the warranty clock has got to start sometime. They did offer,,,,if I took out the entire rearend, they would pay for shipping ($500 total both ways),,,,fix it,,,then send it back to me. The crazy thing is they would not entertain paying a local shop $200 for their labor. So as I explained to them-----"you will saving $300". Moser was firm on their offer so I am waiting on the parts at this point and going to have to eat the labor costs.

That seems more than fair, they can't just have an open-ended 'forever' warranty

Right, not sure how that could confuse anyone. Same as defining turn signals, would you stand in front of the car looking at the windshield and say the driver side turn is the right side turn signal?:confused:

From time to time I have to think about which side is which for a moment...Though with your comments the light bulb went off (pardon the pun or maybe not!) the turn signal is the key...Whether looking at if from the drivers seat, the front or the rear - the turn signal tells you which side of the car is which!

A LOT of people are not car people. A car is a utility to them. They just don't think in car terms. Like me in a jewelry store, they are way out of their area of knowledge so something that is obvious to one of us never enters their thought process.

this conversation is on a car building forum, so should they not be 'car people'?
and by the way, tha'ts not a criticism of OP's question. Hope he finds and fixes the issue

Where I cut my teeth as an engineer left and right were the only acceptable ways to describe it. We made interior door panels, and on our lines we produced both LHD and RHD vehicles down the same line. So to refer to it is driver's side would have been ambiguous in that case! You had to use left or right to ensure your direction was clear, and that was consistent across all suppliers and the OEM.
But outside of automotive we refer to everything as if you were standing in front of the equipment staring at it...so totally opposite! No reason anyone would ever be confused lol!

I personally would send it back, then you know it's right. If I understand correctly they are paying for shipping so $0 out of your pocket. They are at that point honoring and expired warranty. Kudos to them.

The left/right discussion is why boats deal in port/starboard. Tautologies make my head hurt.

In a car the right side is the passenger side, for a left hand drive car.
In a jewelry store the right diamond is the BIG diamond.

Will Moser offer any additional support on the replacement parts if a local shop installs? Hope you get it all set without too much additional hassle.

In Radiology we look at the image like the person is standing in front of and facing us. So I spend all day dictating on the patients Left which is my right all day. After work I have to flip my switch in my brain or I will continue in that mindset.

I am impressed by the offer from Moser, out of warranty and taking care of the customer. I am surprised the OP was not praising them and taking care of business.

Yes. Please don't get me wrong here. I am thrilled about the support/offer from Moser. Just seemed odd they would be out of pocket (by $300) on my option versus their own. They are very receptive and I never had to wait more than two minutes when I called them. These guys know their stuff and I am glad they are there to support us. Their offer was way more than what I expected.

If I was Moser, that $300 is insurance that the diff was really fixed when dropped off to the shipping company.
Local (to the car owner) shops are too much of a wildcard.

Moser may have a shipping contract, and, in effect, already paid for shipping. So cheaper to just ship and deal with it than come up with a custom solution.

Effectively Moser is washing their hands of this rear end. By having the carrier change done by a third party any further issues are on that party, not Moser.

Update, Moser was great in getting me a replacement "Trac-Loc" differential. They included the gasket, gear oil and modifier as well. Moser also provided a return shipping label for the removed part. I did have to purchase new bearings and races. Replacement was uneventful. Spent 10 minutes doing figure 8's in a parking lot to break in the clutches. Now I have upgraded from One legged (wheel) to Two legged. lol
