View Full Version : Coyote oil pressure high... concerning?

I just eliminated my front oil cooler, couldn't just go back to oil filter on the engine and had to still use the remote filter just went back from remote filter to engine block adapter.
I thought this would help my oil pressure drop but it hasn't.
At start up oil pressure is about 95psi, it will drop down to 60-70 at times while driving at a stop light but back to 90-95 when driving.
The engine runs and sounds great (still have high idle issue but I've given up trying to find a tuner right now)
All guages are good, runs cool so no other red flags however oil pressure is high... assuming the guage is accurate should I be concerned?

I have a Gen 2 Coyote. Oil pressure at idle is approx 35-40 PSI. At 3,000 RPM, it's 85-95 PSI. Was told that's normal.

My wife's 2015 Mustang GT has had similar #s from new.

Having run two Coyotes, a Gen 2 and a Gen 3, I agree those numbers are probably normal. The Gen 3 has an oil control valve that as I understand is supposed to relieve some of the higher pressure under certain conditions. Every little bit helps as the OE's are going for maximum efficiency. But pretty sure it's not active in the crate motor calibration.

There's a few Coyote builds on Power Nation over on Youtube where they've commented on pressures over 100 psi during dyno pulls, so that's normal.

Thanks Gentlemen... feel a little better, I'm not gonna concern about it with no other issues and running so well.
Happy 4th and thanks again

I believe tighter bearing clearances cause the higher pressure, I had a 355 SBC that was built for drag racing ,45 #at idle 95 anything over 6500. The motor could spin to 9K.

Pressure is similar to my Gen 1. 90+ at start 40 at idle 85-90+ running. Trying to remember but IIRC this was a pretty common question when the first G1 Coyotes were being installed in Mk-IV's. Mine is a 2014 crate engine install.

Thanks Kevin, today was 105 here in AZ so thought I would give the car its first real test with a longer drive, long freeway and some stop and go.
Car performed great, temp fluctuated between 80 on the freeway and 95 in stop and go at its hottest. The oil pressure fluctuated between 60 and 95 again depending on stops and acceleration, no issues, no drips and no noises... still have the high idle issue and need to tackle that next but other than that performed very well.
It's hard to not want to drive this car

Its very unusual to get that hot in NC, we were at a 100+ a week agio, but a lot of summer drive is in the mid 90's range. I'm normally running 180*F on both oil & water when car is all warmed up. Water, which warms up first, can run up to 200/205*F dead stop at idle in traffic for a period of time but the oil stays pretty stable. A few blocks in motion will bring the water temperature back down.
NOTE: I do not have a fan side shroud installed but do have Mile Everson's one piece sheet metal tunnel & the Breeze top sealer panel in the intake side of the radiator.
What do you numbers look like?

Very similar to yours, had the car out both yesterday and today (only 102 today) water temp goes between 80 and 95 C and only at 95 when at an extended stop light, most driving sits about 80.
Like yours oil temp takes longer to get up there and according to guage 160 to 180 after extended driving (I did bypass my oil cooler, doesn't need it)
I had no shrouding when I got the car and built my own, definitely helps and looks so much better. 168971

What RPM are you idling at with 40 lbs of oil pressure?
