View Full Version : Coyote oil pressure and oil cooler

Hello all, not sure if this is a dumb question.

I want to eliminate my oil going through my oil cooler... for a number of reasons, the coyote doesn't really need it for normal street driving, just another thing to go wrong and can cause damage if it does, my question is NOT whether or not to eliminate the cooler but more in the routing.

The plumbing goes from the block adapter to the "in" on the remote oil filter, then from the "out" on the remote oil filter to the oil cooler up front, then from the other side of the oil cooler back to the block adapter on the engine... can I simply just rout from the "out" on the remote oil filter back to the block adapter on the engine?

I understand this should be a no brainer question but wanted to see if anyone else has done this after an oil cooler install.

My guages look good with a few small concerns, water temp gets to 85 C or 185 F and doesn't really go much higher even in AZ today at 110 but my oil temp only gets to 140, my oil pressure goes to 100psi at start up and when driving ranges from about 75-95 depending on acceleration or stops which is a bit too high in my opinion even for a coyote.

I don't need the oil cooling and want to eliminate the oil cooler as a possible cause of higher oil pressure as they can tend to cause higher pressure.

OK, I'll answer with a dumb question myself. Why even have the block adapter and related plumbing? Just use the stock adapter. With the Roadster there's plenty of room. I agree you don't need the oil cooler with a Coyote for street driving. Assuming the cooling system is plumbed and working properly. Ideally with a shroud on the fan. Many builds hang the oil cooler in the opening because they want the look. Usually with fake lines that don't go anywhere.

Thanks Edward... I was of the impression I couldn't eliminate the remote filter and was needed with the coyote, I purchased the car unfinished with drivetrain installed, I actually talked with the guy who started the build the other day... I asked if he had to install the remote filter or would the filter go directly on the motor, he said he had to, not sure if its because of the hydro power steering and brakes assm.

I haven't been under the car deep enough to take a good look

I obviously can't say directly because I haven't see the build. But for a Roadster (and Coupe) generally there's plenty of room for a low profile oil filter in the Coyote stock location. Examples include Mobil 1 M1-113A, Fram PH10060, Wix/Napa 57060, Napa 7060. I've used mainly the Mobil 1 in my Coyote builds. Ford specifies a filter that's too large to fit. But the smaller ones fit fine, many of us use them, and are used on similar GM and related engines. Anything related to power steering or power brakes are normally well clear of the oil filter area. But again, can't say for sure since I haven't seen it.

Thanks again Edward, I have a little travel this week but will get the car up in the air when i get back... removing the remote oil filter would be my first choice. Thanks again. Bob

Sorry guys, not trying to beat this up, I'm gonna get the car way up in the air this weekend with an intention of completely eliminating not only the oil cooler but also the oil filter relocation with one of the above "smaller" oil filters, are there MK4 coyote Gen 1 builds out there with the filter directly on the motor (no relocation) anything I should know before moving forward with this.
Thank you.

What you want is something like this. https://www.americanmuscle.com/frpp-oil-adapter-1517gt.html

It allows you to use a bigger filter, which I personally think is a good thing.

All you need is Ford P/N AL3Z-6890-A, if you don't already have it. Remove the oil filter relocation plate, install this short threaded adapter along with one of the short filters mentioned above, and you're good to go.

Thank you, I assume I also need the stock oil filter adapter for Gen 1 ?

Thanks... assuming it will work with Gen 1 on an MK4... I thought i read somewhere these wouldn't work but I could be wrong

OK I'm reading some threads... am I reading correct? I will not need the stock Gen 1 adapter and can use this directly on the engine or is this for Gen 3 only in place of the factory relocation adapter which is not on the Gen 1

I think I got it, thanks guys... I will need the factory Gen 1 oil filter adapter... I found one local, thanks again
