My POL list isn't bad compared to some I've heard of but one item that's about to slow me down is the fuel tank cover. I've heard FFR has the tanks in stock but are waiting for the covers to ship them together. It's not going to be long before not having the fuel tank is going to be a problem, how important is the cover/shield? If the cover isn't really necessary I can get a new Dorman tank from Amazon for $103 and have it in a couple of days.
Thanks Forum!

You want the shield. You can try LMR for a cover. I ordered one a little while back and had it in no time. It was a cord part too!

Yes, the cover is worth waiting for. I'd stick with the one from Factory Five. I think it's proprietary to them. It doesn't have the big "bump-in" in the front that fits around the diff like a standard Mustang cover. The cover gives the underside a nice finished look, protects the tank, plus probably the straps would be too long without it. This picture is the FF tank and cover in my Coupe. Best picture I had that showed the tank from the bottom. It's the same tank as the Roadster.

Not proprietary. It’s the same OEM equivalent 1981-2004 Mustang cover (Ford #F8ZZ-9B007-AA) available elsewhere—-Late Model Restoration, CJ Pony Parts, etc. for about a hundred bucks.

Thanks Jeff. Obviously a bad assumption on my part (and we all know what that means...) after what must have been an earlier stock version on my Mk3 that did have the bump-in and the ones on later builds that didn't. Those were all packaged in import boxes along with the tank and related fuel system components. Which I guessed was unique to Factory Five. Similar to recent radiators, side pipes, steering racks, etc.
Which leads to the question of why parts are on POL's, sometimes for extended periods, when they're available with a couple clicks at multiple sources. No doubt why some are frustrated. :(

I also got my tank and cover on Saturday (2/26 build date). Hopefully you'll get yours soon. I did the same thing though - bought a tank off amazon for $100. When the one from FF came in i took the cover off it and put it on my already mounted tank, fit perfect. gave the tank to my neighbor whos rebuilding a fox body.

I think we all know how that works Paul.
It comes down to the rule of three for goods and services which I have been citing for 30+ years:
---Price
---Quality
---Time
Pick 2, because that's all you can have.
If you're using a 2nd or 3rd tier supplier to achieve a price point it's liable to come with delivery delays.

Yep. I always say Good, Fast, or Cheap, pick two. I'm sure FFR have price/quantity agreements with their suppliers.
Thanks everyone for the response.

Yeah I had a purchasing manager tell me that years ago. I get it. Try working in the automotive industry with the big 3 (or whatever they're called these days) plus the imports. They don't accept it. Just saying. But for a smaller buyer like Factory Five, I understand. It's all about balance between the three. Still pains me when guys are buying parts from their POL's that are readily available.
