View Full Version : Coyote Oil Pressure during cranking?

Getting close to first start, I've primed my engine by pumping about 2 quarts of oil into the coyote through the oil pressure sensor wire. I feel it maybe a good idea to crank it without fuel a few times and check for leaks before hooking up the fuel lines. So the question is, is this actually a good idea? Will coyote generate any oil pressure at all with just the starter motor cranking?

It might develop a little measurable oil pressure with the plugs removed so it will spin faster. I doubt enough to uncover any oil leaks. Not sure how much good it does putting oil through the oil pressure gauge port. Unless it was done with pressure. GM recommends a pressure prime using a tank for their crate motors. Which I did with with the LS3 in my truck build. That definitely showed some indication on the gauge. But Ford doesn't say anything about it. Personally, I'd hook up your fuel lines and fire it up. That's what I did with both of my Coyote builds. I was watching the oil pressure gauge and they developed pressure almost immediately. You'll find the Coyote generally has quite high oil pressure. They are lubed at the factory during assembly and I guarantee Ford just starts them at the end of the vehicle assembly line and drives them away. Did you fill the oil filter before spinning it on? That's the one thing you can do to help accelerate the process at startup.

I did not prime my engine but I did remove all the plugs and disconnected the ECM. Using a temporary switch down to my starter motor, I cranked it over until I got oil pressure. It didn't take more than a few seconds for the gauge to read and I believe I got at least 20 psi after approximately 7 to 10 seconds cranking. My engine had been sitting for 3years since I received it.
I then put all the plugs back in reconnected the ECM, primed the fuel for 10 minutes, looking and sniffing for leaks. All good.
Cranked engine, fired and ran beautifully. Celebrated for about a week.
I agree with Edwardb. Fill it up with oil and give it a go. Worked for me. btw - "fill it up" took a bit more than I expected initially. I have the Moroso oil pan, and my engine takes about 9 quarts.

Thanks for the swift replies guys. I decided to give it a go. I filled the engine up (mine took 10qt!), Filled the oil filter with oil before putting it on, and cranked it.
I didn't remove the plugs and the engine didn't spin very fast. The oil pressure gauge read 0 the whole time. I didn't crank it for more than 3 seconds at a time tho.

When the ignition switch is in the “crank” position there is no power to the gauge feed so you won’t see an indication of pressure. If you want to verify oil pressure when cranking you can put a simple mechanical gauge on it.

Or unplug the ECM so the engine won't start, put the key in the run position, so the gauges are powered and 'jump' the starter for a few seconds. Badabing.

What oil pan do you have? Was not aware there is a 10qt Coyote oil pan. Mine is 8qts & no longer made. Thought the biggest was road race & drag race both at 9.5 qts

Wow, nice trick, didn't know you could pass oil through a wire.
Sorry but had to pick on you a bit. Congrats on getting to this stage. Make sure you post your first start video once it is running.

HA I didn't realize I wrote that! Thanks Alan. Will do.

I have the moroso oil pan pre-installed by factory five. It took me ~10qts of oil to fill the oil filter and then get the oil dip stick to read just around the "high" indicator. Here's also a thread on this and it confirms the 9.5qts to 10.5qts number for a coyote with the moroso pan. https://thefactoryfiveforum.com/showthread.php?28564-Oil-for-Coyote&p=326930&viewfull=1#post326930

I had the ACC toggle switch on when cranking the engine. Make sure the gauges were indeed working :P

Yeah, I posted to that thread. Did not know they came out with new pans, thats what I was trying to find out. Only thing that matters is where the oil shows up on the stock dip stick. 8qt pan takes 8.5 with a Mobile 1-113A filter.
