I saw that, too.

Edit: This Factory Five Roadster was acquired by the current owner on BaT in February 2022 and is being offered on consignment by the selling dealer with a clean California title.

Supply and demand. Not sure where everyone is getting the money but have ideas. They better hold on though as the next couple years may be tough.

You're correct, but can't comment more as it would be pulled as political.

What's wrong with some of you guys? After years of these cars selling too low we all should be cheering and encouraging the recent market adjustment, not calling it "crazy." I've had 3 cars that I've been involved with sell in the last 8 months; one that I painted would have been a $70K car two years ago went for $91K, another that I painted last year which would have been a low 40s car in 2020 just sold last month for $54K. A Mk3 full build that I did in 2013 sold for $32K in 2018 and just sold again in April for $46,000...not a bad return to the second owner for 3 years of fun!

Unless you're in the market to buy this trend is good for all of us! Heck, it's all got me thinking that maybe I should pretty mine up with a nice color and send it looking for a new home ;)

I wonder what a mildly powered MK4 built in the last year would go for? Depending on mods and paint, of course, but if you assume a mild 302 carbed with a T5 and a nice paint job. Last fall a consignment place near me had two replicas for sale. Both spoken for, both were between 10 and 20 years old, one was from some company in TX that isn't making replica kits anymore (the other was a Superformance), and both had relatively standard powertrains priced at $61K and $80K. The more expensive one had a 460" engine, lesser had a 351W.

Thanks for keeping the train on the rails Rich. We all get plenty of politics elsewhere.
I think we should all be happy we have the means keep a totally impractical car for no other reason than enjoyment.
Mine would be worth the cost if I never made a dime on it. All the better that their prices are appreciating.

I recently decided to sell my Cobra on BAT and was surprised when a very similar one went for about $40K. I have no experience with this so I'm asking the community:
1. Should I set a reserve price?
2. How can I determine what the appropriate reserve price would be?

Bring A Trailer has some pretty slick tools to help you decide what is best. For example, I did a search for all Factory Five Cobra Replicas that didn't meet the reserve price. There are only twelve examples dating back to 2017 that I found. Looking at all those that have sold, there are 119 examples going back to 2017 and the prices are definitely trending up, but there is still quite a spread from low to high. Just looking at 2022, the lowest price sold was $42,500 and the highest was $75,000.

https://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=167707&d=1654474045

The average price for 2022 is $57,975.14 (22 examples).

There are so many variables that can drive the sales price that you really have to assess how well the car is built, the engine, rear end, and other features that are in the build. The reserve is a safety net for the seller that can't afford to risk getting less than that value for the car. Reserves can affect bidding, but if you set it correctly, the car should meet/exceed the reserve.

There are Forum members that have extraordinary disposable capitol; fun car cost/expense is throw-away money. The BaT shopper demographic is flush with similar people.
Rising prices/cost and income are a function or capitalism. Everyone wants more money for their product/service so they can spend more money. It is a fiscal loop.
I once upon a time bought a gallon of gas or a pack of cigarettes for 26 cents.

I think this car was actually undervalued compared to prior sale/interest as well as compared to some other recent sales. Over the last month, in general, I've seen prices soften on BaT due to what I suspect is concern of recession and bear market.

This Saturday a MK1 basic build bid to 33,500 did not meet reserve. I'm glade the owner held out and did not sell I don't think you could build it for that today

The niche market of Cobra replicas has grown in volume to the extent that the market may be saturated from time to time. As a marque it is not as well known as other special interest cars that were advertised and maufactured in greater volume by OEMs.
Ironically that OEM build inventory has shrunk through atrophy while Cobra type cars are growing in number and have never been larger. There may be 100 Cobra replicas for sale on any given day.
Buyers now have a used inventory to shop with varied aethetics, authenticity, quality and performance to consider. If the buyers have anxiety over service and repair, the "value proposition" may be a hard sell.

The prices in 2022 have been strong in spite of a declining economy; however, people buying collector cars are typically at the upper end of the economic scale and are less impacted than those who don't have disposable dollars to spend...With that said this is the car that had me thinking about possibly selling my car to do a future project:

https://bringatrailer.com/listing/2020-shelby-cobra-2/

I almost feel like people are buying now since their dollars won't go as far in the the future because of the inflation rate...In any case it seems that strong sale prices is the current trend nonetheless...In addition, I think Edwardb (Sir. Paul) got great money for his builds, but I don't think he sold them on B.A.T.

I keep an eye on BAT as a sanity check to keep my insurance in line with what it would take to replace the car should something happen. I enjoy it so much I'll never sell it. If anything were to happen I'd want to replace it ASAP like it was a daily driver :-)

I've sold three Roadsters. One locally by word of mouth. The other two by listing here on the forum. I did get decent prices at the time based on what others were selling for. But sure wish I had them to sell now. Based on what I've observed, all would have been much higher.

I agree 100% with Jeff's comments... about time we started seeing decent prices on these. We shouldn't complain. Well, I guess that's if you're selling and not buying, right?

P.S. Don't know about the "sir" thing. It's just me. :p

Pretty good money for a car with some obvious assembly shortcuts, weak bodywork and crooked & peeling taped on stripes.

https://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=167810&d=1654605322

Therein lies the reason why I suggest that BAT auctions not be considered gospel; I have to think that some of the cars sold on BAT (any car, not just ours) might not be bringing the same dollars if the buyers were inspecting them live and in person before bidding.

More recently I have had people who are talking to me about the car, are often asking, "How much would you sell it for?" To which I say, "You will have to deal with the grandchildren first!"

I love driving it too much. Still a PROUD Owner of an Original Mark I!

I just finished mine, but I have long thought that if I needed the money (say, I lost my job or needed more money for the kids college) I would part ways. I have been pleased that I can confidently get back out what I paid (likely a little more). I do have a number that if offered I would sell on the spot. I don't think that will happen but if it did I would let her go.

I'm a couple of months away from finishing mine and also have that sell on the spot number in my head. I can't wait to finally drive and enjoy my dream, but I can't help but think that if I were offered enough money it would be even more fun to build this car a second time.

Prices across the board for Cobra replicas are up. I spent a lot of time researching, dreaming, and deciding what brand I want. Started 20 years ago when I was first married, and my father-in-law introduced me to FFR. Because I am 6' 2" and wanted extra cockpit space, I was considering Backdraft. I spent the last 2 years getting serious about buying and getting finances in order (and my wife on board). But as inflation hit, I watched the prices of used Backdraft and Superformance increase $10,000 - $20,000, and the prices for FFR increase $10,000. My brothers just finished building their Roadster (still in Gel Coat), told me how much fun it was, so with inflation looming, I came full circle and put my order for the Roadster in December. I spent nearly $10,000 more on my kit than my brother (my brother bought his during a sale, and I bought mine just after FFR increased prices). Since then, I am considering changing from 17 inch, to 18 inch rim and tires, but what was a $300 upgrade will now be $800. The prices for Wilwood's also keeps increasing.

Was considering a 427 from blueprint, but watched the prices go up a few thousand. I was debating between a 427 and Coyote, and was able to buy a Gen 3 Coyote/TKX from Forte before prices went up. My kit would be substantially higher if I bought now compared to 6 months ago. I haven't even thought about paint prices. I was hoping for Kleiner to paint mine. Maybe I can lock in a rate now???

Long story short, not sure if car prices are up because of the increased cost to replace, supply and demand or inflation. None the less, the prices needed to go up. Now, I just have 3 more months of wait time before I can start to build.

Remember that absolutely everything with four wheels is going for insane prices right now.

My friend looked at a Jeep Rubicon that had a $25,000 "dealer price adjustment" on it. Almost $80,000 for a JEEP???? The world has gone crazy. And some idiot pays it.

Apparently not all Cobra replica's are fetching crazy money on BAT. The reserve wasn't met when the bidding ended at $33K on this Classic Roadsters car. (https://bringatrailer.com/listing/1967-ac-cobra-8/?utm_source=transactionalemail&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=bat_bid_placed_seller#comments-anchor)
I'm sure the extended wheel base limits the market a bit but this looks like a nicely done car. I'm surprised it didn't go for more.

I wonder if the fact that it's in Canada deterred some potential buyers from the states.
