View Full Version : Owning a FFR

The SPIRIT OF building and owning a FFR vehicle is about the pride in showing it, talking to strangers and belonging to a club and making lifetime friends. My husband finished his Roadster three years ago after 4 1/2years. We are part of the Deep South COBRA Club; taking rides together thru our beautiful country, talking and laughing over lunch and dinner. And perhaps the best part is the guys standing in the parking lot discussing their COBRAs, the truck that hauls the trailer and the trailer. This is what owning a FFR vehicle is all about.

My husband is going to build me a Project 818 as soon as available - am so exicted! Having met Dave Smith and some of his team, we have complete faith that it will be nothing short of AWESOME. I understand that it is going to come already painted and just have one request - Can I get it in Pink?

When I started getting into Subarus, I found myself a part of a great community of friendly and welcoming people. From that group of people I've found other communities that I'm proud to be a part of. I'm happy that I'm able to add another to that list and I can't wait to have an 818 to deepen the connection.

The FFR community seems that is a large mirror and even magnification of the Subaru community. I cannot wait.

A forum does not entail the entirety of a car community...

especially NASIOC, that's a mighty small slice of the overall Subaru owners

So, that brings up an interesting question: As an 818 owner, will I also be a "Subaru owner?"

Factory Five Roadster builders are typically embraced as "Ford" customers and there is a natural tie between the custom car and the engine/powertrain. I think the 818 will be a natural adjunct to Subaru. Frankly, i hope that Subaru Corporate understands the tie-in as well as Ford Racing and GMPP has when it comes to the most passionate and committed fans.

I've talked to my local Subaru dealership about the upcoming car when I was purchasing my Forester and they are VERY excited about the prospect of seeing them on the road and at Subaru events.
There is really no downside for Subaru or their dealers, the 818 is not going to be any sort of direct competition for any of their cars, not even the new BRZ.
It means extended lives for engines and drivetrains that might have been junked otherwise and future potentioal sales for the dealership parts departments.
It brings even more performance oriented image to the Subaru name.
The 818 will no doubt also be introducing some people to Subaru mechanicals for the first time.

Will you beable to put the 2.5 STi motor in? I have one laying around with built internals and heads form my old STI but the rest is gone.

Post #2 says the transmission won't work. In post #21 I ask if anyone knows why.

"Subarus are like Legos" The STI block should bolt in just fine. It's amazing how much from one subaru can just bolt into another.

From another post somewhere, it's an issue with converting it to FWD.

I believe the crossmember is the same between the STI and WRX, so mount location shouldn't be an issue. And the 5mt wiring harness and sensors literally screw right into the 6mt case. The only other issue I can think of is length. The 6mt is noticeably longer. It is also considerably heavier.

The STI motor will bolt right up to the 5mt without issue. A later (04+) 5mt case with stronger internals should handle the power just fine.

FFR (at this time) is only officially supporting the 5 speed. The AWD to 2WD conversion part will be part of the kit.

A builder can do his own thing, and a 6 speed would likely not be difficult. But it would still be "on his own" because the AWD to 2WD parts would be different.
