View Full Version : Mystery metal filings: cause for worry?
8650 made her debut at Gingerman Raceway yesterday, but that's another story for another day. That said, upon my return, I noticed metal filings/shavings/debris on the doorsill. Pretty much exclusively on the driver side. Here are two photos, one close up.

I can tell you what it isn't. The brake rotors are fine. That was my first inclination, but the brakes look good. So.... any ideas what could have caused this junk? Anything to worry about? Thanks in advance.

Speaking from experience... If you went to the track with a good friend, and were competing against that good friend, I would check the pockets of said good friend, and confirm he/she wasn't depositing debris in competitors machine.
Naw... That never happens.

Probably just shook lose drill shavings left over from the build process. Check to see if they are magnetic, if not, just left over FOD, foreign object debris from drilling all those aluminum panels. If Boeing can have a problem with it in aircraft manufacturing, not a surprise we will have some of it too.

Totally off topic, but I'd sure do something with that floor mat. It can move enough to get tangled with your pedals. Which can't be good. Either remove or tie it down. I've use these and they work well. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07BTH5LHS/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I’m in the leftover drill shavings camp. Probably stirred up some pink dust also ;)

Leftover crud.
Floor mats. Everything not bolted down or otherwise secured is removed for track use.
Al, if you are going back to Gingerman I'd sure like to know. I don't need a good reason to visit Gingerman, kinda a "home track" for me. Would be great to meet and I do a fair imitation of a pit crew.

Yes, it is a problem. I have to pull on it every time I drive. Wasn't a problem at the track, as they require you to remove everything, including mats from the car. edit: ordered the carpet clips! thanks!

Let's talk! The biggest problem for me is scheduling. I got lucky this time - they fill up as soon as they open registration.

Dust, droppings, or whatever you want to call it. After Da Bat ruffed in the doors before taking the body off to paint, the stuff got everywhere. I was cleaning and vacuuming for weeks as I seemed to get a new layer every few days.

Always wear sunglasses on your first couple drives. Metal shavings and pink dust are normal.
I love the references to "pink dust". Although I understand what you're talking about, it raises all kinds of visions in my head...
btw - 8650 is entering its third driving season, so you'd think all this crap had worked its way out by now. Nevertheless, I've come to believe it was the stress of the track on the car. Maybe I'll need to go again just to get the rest of the crap out - along with any remaining "pink dust".

Just be sure it is not the filings in your teeth falling out from spirited driving!
Do it Al :)
