View Full Version : spectre intake Coyote Gen3 - where does the breather hose go?

From prior knowledge, you can use the Spectre or Treadstone intakes - I got the Spectre from Mike Forte as part of my Coyote Gen3 setup


there are no Spectre instructions on the Gen3 installation guide, so I had to check the prior guide

there is no chrome elbow shown with the 'port' for the intake tube (see above pic)

my question is - where does the breather hose connect? or is it not needed?

On my gen 2 it connects though the left side coil cover.

Also, those two ports on the elbow had to be drilled out on mine.

The second picture on page 73 of the coyote guide you linked shows where the other end goes. thats just a fresh air intake, so some people do not hook it up to the intake and instead just put a little filter on it. Something like this: https://lmr.com/item/LRS-261340JR/mustang-gt-pcv-breather-kit-1116 Goes on the port on the drivers side of the valve cover.

im not sure an open breather will pass CA smog

The kit I received had both the rubber elbow and the polished one. Only the rubber one had ports, so I used a step drill to make the holes and used blue RTV to seal the adapters in place. The instructions on mine don’t mention anything about modifying the polished elbow but the pictures do show it with the ports installed in the adapter between the elbow and the throttle body. I believe the intake and associated part kit came from JLT. The ports are for CMVV and PCV.

Sorry I can’t be of more help on the instructions, but the above picture shows where I mounted mine. Hopefully, it’s the same on a gen3.
FYI, I did eventually clock the MAF to the nine o’clock position.

Later version Gen 2's and all Gen 3's don't have a CMCV connection to the intake. They use ambient air by the vacuum motors with no work required. Only connection is the PCV.

yes that’s my concern - there is no PCV connection on the 90-degree bend - do I have an incorrect part?

I'm not aware the Spectre piece ever came with a PCV connection. Mine didn't. No worries. Just add one. I bought the connector from JLT. Same type as the other Coyote connectors. Maybe available elsewhere, but that's where I found them. Comes with a grommet so cut the hole accordingly. The lower connection in this picture from my 20th Anniversary Roadster. This was an early Gen 2 so also had a CMCV connection. Ignore for later Gen 2's and the Gen 3.

Thanks guys - I'm really surprised, actually shouldn't be at this point, that this is one of those things that is 1/2 provided for in the kit - if they source the PCV tube, they should source the other end of the connection.
For a $150 intake you'd think they'd add the connector - or even instructions!

Toadster, I cut the fittings out of the F5 provided intake, then drilled the spectre part and had them welded in. After my gen3 started running poorly I machined new fittings and remounted the rubber F5 part. Now it won't start with either one. Quite disappointed with the intake/ecu support/info. Hope you have better outcome.

Something else is happening here. The PCV line from the LH head to the intake (the subject of this thread) alone shouldn't affect running and especially not cause a no-start condition. It's an emissions thing and typically recommended to have connected. But guys run them open at the head connection (e.g. with a filter only) and the engine starts and runs normally.

Have you had your Gen 3 custom tuned? It's not going to run well until then. But it should still start.

I'd agree with Paul on this one, the PCV return won't create a run issue, it's an emissions item
I'm not a big fan of how 'deep' this port runs in the intake, I may trim it down quite a bit seems like it would block airflow

finally getting this intake installed on the car, the breather tube seems too short to reach the elbow (haven't drilled for the bung yet)
each section is pushed into the tubing till it stops so can't go any shorter

Likely, yes. I did mine exactly as Edwardb shows in his photo above. Just cut that hose off and re-use the fittings with some Gates PCV-rated hose.

ah makes sense! I wish FFR would document these things! I guess with their intake hose it just fits, but anyone with a Spectre setup will need to modify...

I've lost track of how many modifications are needed on this car! LOL

You may be able to heat that tube with a heat gun and form it to fit. Did this on my Gen 3. I started with the plastic fitting in the rubber grommet and ended up with a new elbow with an aluminum fitting I welded into the elbow. Worked out well. Sorry no pic of just the elbow with fitting.

that's a good idea, it's a very odd plastic tube for sure - almost heat shrink material... but too late, already trimmed it and looking for some spare hose :)

I worked with Guy Smith at Spectre Performance to put together components that would fit and look the way I wanted to. As usual my solution was not a cheap way to go, but got what I wanted. A note, Spectre Performance is a K&N company.
The intake tube is from a kit designed for the Mustang GT. About the only thing I was able to use was the intake tube. I went that route as I do not have anyone local that I would trust to do good aluminum tig welding. The intake tube has all the connections for the Coyote vacuum line and crankcase ventilation. A shorter 3.5 inch coupler was selected at the throttle body. I opted for a black HPR9617K air filter with a SPR-990003 MAF sleeve. The MAF sleeve adapts the 4" filter intake to the 3.5 inch intake tube. I choose the 9617 filter to maximize filter area and fill the space between the end of the intake tube and the inner fender apron.
