I know this has been covered before, but many of the posts were from years back, and I believe the tax laws may have changed recently.
I live only 2 hours north of FFR, in the beautiful state of Maine. I was going to pick up the kit (build date Oct) but was told that the sales tax is roughly the same as the Stewart shipping costs (which is true). If Stewart delivers it, I pay no tax to FFR. However, I will still need to pay Maine tax when I register it.
If I pay FFR the sales tax, do I still get hit with tax in Maine when I register it? If that's the case, then I'll definitely pick it up myself and save on the Stewart transport costs.
I spoke to my town clerk, and I got the "deer in the headlights" sound over the phone. They basically had no idea as its parts that I'm buying from FFR and not a completed car.

Any insight here would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Each state has their own policy, Colorado asked for proof of tax paid. If I'd had proof they would not have taxed me again, but since I didn't they charged it right there on the spot. Hope this helps. FYI, don't offer anything they don't ask for - a little something I learned while dealing with an FAA check-airman.

My understanding is that if you pay sales tax in Massachusetts you will get credit for that when your state collects their sales tax at registration time. Essentially if you pay Massachusetts sales tax of $XXX when you pick up the kit and you owe your state sales tax of $YYY when you register the car you’ll only owe the difference between $YYY and $XXX.

Clear as mud?
