Now if I use the FFmetal foward firewall with the above dash, will I be able to fit the FFR heater?

Thanks

Bill

I did, but still had to go a little off the path with how the heater mounts to the firewall… but it fit and with a coyote. More detail and pics in my build thread.

Bill, it really depends on the engine you are using. As mentioned, the heater, glove box and Coyote will fit with modifications, but I don’t think this is true with some other engines/air filters.

Thanks, will be using the stock 302

I would think someone has done it with a 302. I’d post the question and see if you could get a measurement.

Engine size makes very little difference when you're talking about whether a heater will fit behind the firewall forward kit. My Firewall Forward will work with any engine you can fit into an FFR Cobra, including a Coyote. The firewall moves out 1.5", leaving plenty of room for the engine.

Bill, you're correct that the firewall forward by itself will work with any engine. The reason that heater + glovebox + firewall forward is engine-dependent is that even with the firewall forward, the heater often needs a bumpout box fabricated to move it forward enough to clear the glove box. The firewall forward sometimes doesn't provide enough clearance, by itself, to fit a heater behind a glove box. How far you can bump the heater forward past the firewall is engine-dependent.

I have used the FFmetal firewall forward with the supplied heater. Engine is a stroked 302. I don't have a dash with glove box, but I would think it'd fit. With regards to heater vs engine, I had some interference between the 90 degree tube bends and the valve covers. I used taller than stock valve covers due to roller rockers. What I did was desolder the fittings on the heater, cur the tubes a it, and resoldered back the fittings. Put a wet cloth on the plasic part, didn't melt any of the plastic. I put it in the FFR recommended position, you might be able to move it a bit and avoid interference that way instead. I have since switched the supplied engine mounts for the Gordon Levy solid mounts which are a bit lower. Haven't checked if that would have cured the interference. I can give you some measurements if you'd like any when I get back to Norway, on vacation in FL at the moment.

I should have said air cleaner. Some engines get some pretty big air filter housings and that can conflict with the heater, that’s why I suggest asking someone with a similar setup to take some measurements.

BTW, I took the opportunity to mount my heater up against the back of the glovebox and it lent it some rigidity, doesn’t feel so plastic this way.

There is a guy on youtube his channel is Dan's Garage he is building a Mk4 and just yesterday he posted a video part 42 where he fabricated a heater box to use with his dash with glove box.

This will give you an idea of how much space there is between the heater and the dash using the ffmetal firewall forward. The heater is in the stock location, and you can see dash hoop and the upper edge of the aluminum dash.
