Wiring gremlin

Decided to add an external fuel pump as a backup using the Russ Francis existing harness. Key on inertia connected no power at rear FP connector.Have power at fuse, power in on relay. If I ground the ground wire at top of relay , the relay clicks on and have power at FP plug. Can I have a bad ground somewhere in the loom? Looking at the wiring diagram the black relay ground goes to the main ground in the loom. Everything else works. Anybody else having this problem, any suggestions? Thanks

You could trace it back to the main ground but why bother. Cut the wire, extend
It and ground it to the frame.
