View Full Version : More Bonnet Issues (Hood)

Hi all
I've come across an issue I cant seem to figure out with the pontoon alignment to the bonnet.

The rest of the bonnet fits pretty well, but one pontoon has a fingers worth of gap at the rear and a cigarette paper gap at the front (see picture)

Its all OK at the top, so I cant pull it down at the rear and the hinge bracket is as high as it will go on that side.

I guess I could add some packing to the bonnet where it sits on the radiator ducting to raise the front, or modify the hinge bracket to enable it to be raised to give me some lift at the front, but I wonder if anyone has any other ideas, maybe Ive done something wrong :(

The pontoon is flexible and you can move it with the lower splash shield to get it to align better. You may also need to shim under the door on the body. Getting the body, hood and doors to fit is process as they all affect each other.

I've never built a Daytona; however, I did see these videos of the Make A Wish Daytona done by the folks at Manheim Auctions.

I don't know if this helps or not, but thought you might find them to be of some use.

Good Luck!

David W's advice was spot on in my experience. The pontoons are flexible to a point and you need the lower splash shield in place while doing the alignment and then anchor to those. Otherwise you'll be chasing it all over the place. Also spot on that everything affects everything. I spent two full weeks trying to get the body and front hood aligned to where I was happy with it. Granted, I'm slow so maybe will take you less time. But it's a juggling act and nothing can be done in isolation. It's possible to get them aligned quite nicely. But takes some effort and patience. Good luck.

Thanks for the replies.

I haven't tried shimming the body, I will give that a go to see if it effects the doors, but my worry is that the doors will no longer fit if I do that, so I left the body where it is.

I have tried to move the pontoons, but they would be under a lot of stress if I were to force them into the correct place.

I'll measure everything again to see if something isn't square or straight, then try shims etc. Worse case I will cut them like the video link solution, I have already done this on the front of the hood.

I thought the doors were hard at 2 days each, I've been on the bonnet for 2 weeks already :(

thanks again,
I'll reply with my what I find in the end

Well, you're running into the mistake I think I made on my build. The doors should be the last thing fitted. Because of the interactions between the main body and the hood, if I do it again those will be aligned and locked down before the doors are fitted. I had to go back and do some major adjustments on my doors because I too did them with the main body before the hood was fitted. The best fit for the body and especially the hood once it was latched down messed up my original door alignment. I was able to get the doors "OK" but they could be better.

edwardb, ( and other Type65 builders )

any tips on handling hood fitting if you're a solo builder ? I had to snag a neighbor the other day to help me test fit my hood. I'm considering if I can setup a winch system and use my engine hoist to help me move the hood into place. Anyone else got any tips on doing this if there's no extra muscle available ?

thanks!

Hi Paul / David,
I've just been over it all again and tried to shim it, etc, added the supports, inner mudguards to the bonnet and still its a long way out of alignment.

Putting a straight edge along the bottom of the door across to the pontoon and the bonnet is square to the body (sorry... hood!), but the pontoon raises as it extends, so to me it appears the pontoon is the issue. If I push it down to the right position, it would be under too much stress.

I think its going to have to be cut, I'm not going to rush into anything, but my gut feeling is cut a slice out of it and re-fibreglass it.

Mark, no way I could have managed getting it fitted without another person helping. Lost count how many times it went on and off over the last few weeks.

thanks again
Phil

Grab it through the air exit and lay it down on the car then shimmy into position. Did it many times not that its easy....

How is the horizontal alignment with the cowl? If its dipping forward you can raise the front by adjusting the thread on the hinges. That'll open the front gap up a bit.
Some of us Gen II slobs  have actually cut the bottom part of the hood that meets the pontoon to straighten that out.
I did not put any of my splash shields on until after everything was lined up so that there was no or very little stress on the body.

Yup, I grabbed it from the front at the air exit as well. Got it up over the tires and walked it back while banging my shins into it. Then I used the floor jack to lift/hold the front up while aligning the hinge brackets and sliding the bolts through. Not an event I looked forward to, but not the end of the world either.
