Well my son and I picked up my Roadster yesterday from Factory Five. I just wanted to say thanks to Factory Five for making the pickup such a memorable experience. Anyway, we were unloading the Roadster and my back was shot. I've been struggling with it for a few months now. My son, being the awesome kid he is, told me he would finish unloading. When he set the diff down it was standing up and some of the oil leaked out. Should I have any cause for concern, or can I just top off the diff oil and it be good to go?

I'd just drain it and refill after it's installed.

No need to drain out new oil, just top it up.

Thanks guys. That's what I was thinking. I will sleep better tonight. I feel like a new parent brining home their first baby. I'm glad I have you seasoned pros to help me out.

Sounds like an IRS diff obviously. Quick further word of explanation. The diff is shipped with plastic covers where the CV axles will plug in. They are meant for shipping only and don't necessarily make a 100% seal. So when the diff is set down to where the preinstalled gear lube is against those plugs, it's probably going to leak. Try to store it in the position it would be in the chassis. Once installed and with the CV axles plugged in, it won't leak. I agree to just top it off once installed. Highly recommend to use the Ford recommended gear lube. It's not something that's frequently changed for street use. So I wouldn't mix. Documented for mine is Motorcraft SAE 75W-85 Premium Synthetic Hypoid Gear Lubricant XY-75W85-QL, PN WSS-M2C942-A. Got at at my local Ford dealer.

Congratulations on your pickup and good luck with your build. It's an adventure for sure.
