Went to Griot’s Caffine and Gasoline event today. It’s the first Saturday of every month. Finally warmer weather so this was the largest attendance this year. Paul and I headed there with our cobras. Only cobras there. So, is a Cobra a Super Car? I think it was back in the day. Paul says not now. Lots of different cars showed up. Cobra is the way for me I guess.

They have a show room and several of these are Griot’s cars.

Cobra may have been a super car back in the day, but agree our replicas probably aren't. According to Google and Wikipedia, things to consider: design, acceleration, top speed, handling, power-to-weight ratio, style, rarity, price. Cited examples include Koenigsegg CCX, Pagani Zonda, McLaren F1, Saleen S7 Twin Turbo, Enzo Ferrari, Lamborghini Murcielago and so on. One entry said the price has to exceed the price of your house.

Coincidentally, I attended the first cars and coffee of our season today too. It was warm by early April standards. 35's and sunny. Good turnout. Lots of people itching to get out. The Coupe hadn't been started or driven since late October when it went down for winter hibernation. Started right up and drove perfectly. Put a smile on my face as always. Followed a new Ford GT out at the end of the event. Costs more than my house so probably considered a super car. :p

Why does the super car moniker bother you? Because someone else set some arbitrary standards? Well, I can add a couple myself; a super car should be simple, economical, easy to work on and not try to kill the driver. If your car makes you happy, then by all standards it’s a super car. Everything is relative.

If that was meant for me, then you misunderstood my post. The term doesn't bother me in the least. Whether "super" fits doesn't matter to me either or take anything from our cars. Far from it. Could say a lot more. But don't want to hijack the thread. So will leave it at that.

Paul- the guy I go with. Not Edwardb, says now a days the super car’s definition is it goes over 200. Yes mine can’t go that fast but got it up to 141 and still had more. Super to me! Edwardb, wish I had a coupe too but can’t have everything if you are an average joe like me. Been 3 months since out and about and I still can’t believe I built this cobra and get to own it.

I love these cars too! Sorry if my previous post seemed otherwise. I get it but while those ‘supercars’ are in a category by themselves, they are so impractical that it detracts from their cache. For me, anyway.

This guy said that. Seldom drives his. Every mile is depreciation.

If it was built in your garage with your own two hands and originated at Factory-5, it is a Super Car.
If it came from a factory from a foreign land, then it is just a really, really nice car that cost to much.

It always amazes me that my friends with these really cool cars compare their rides to my Cobra.
Don't get me wrong, I love their cars; however, I love mine far more because I built it.

Those exotics are pretty neat but let me share a few stories about my Type 65 that left me feeling good about what you get vs. the cost of a supercar - however that's defined:

A friend recently bought a GTR and on the same day he took delivery of it, he headed to my shop and wanted to drive the coupe - and loved it.
Another friend has a new 911 and wanted to drive the coupe a bit when we ran the cars down to the WV border - and loved it.
A fellow drove by my shop in one of those gull-wing Mercedes supercars shown in post #2; upon seeing the coupe he left his Mercedes running in the middle of the street to come in and check it out - and loved it.
So far the only friend who declined my offer to drive it has a Robinson R44, a Brantly and an Enstrom in his hangar.

The supercars are nice but when I look at my out-of-pocket costs vs. what I have I feel pretty good about a Factory Five.

I probably shouldn't, but thought I'd add my 2 cents. Upon reading this thread, my first thought was that a super car is how you define it, or "in the eye of the beholder". It's also a question of popular definition: I think "super car" has become synonymous with "exotic". Whatever.

In any case, it's still fun to debate the issue. I think my roadster is super and I think it's exotic to boot!

Good pictures! I saw you posted them to the Avants group too.
With all the calls for rain I didn't think there would be such a good turnout, so aside from missing it I'm glad I was wrong about the attendance.

Hope the drive was great!

I usually don't jump in these conversations but this one is just too much fun! I agree with Al_c, a supercar is in the eye of the beholder. With that said, I drove my type 65 in dark grey sealer to a place called Alice's in the Bay Area, a huge weekend car hang out. As I was driving down this twisty road called skyline a red car came up behind me, a Ferrari of some type as I don't know Ferrari models. We played around for a few miles until both arriving at Alice's. As I got out of the car he pulled up next to me and starting asking about the coupe, within minutes I had 10-12 people around the type 65 asking questions. Not one person was asking about his Ferrari which was an 812 super fast, I found out later it's rare and expensive. Would his Ferrari kick my ^*€ around the track, you can guarantee it, but my home built type 65 was a show stopper compared to his. I have never driven a Ferrari 812 but I am pretty sure driving the coupe is more fun as it's so raw
and so much a race car for the street. Maybe not as smooth, comfortable, compliant, quiet, etc. I think that's enough from me. Have a great evening everyone.

Maybe a Supercar is what you did not see coming, and it spanks you in the process:

These things are made into limousines and hearses, but not replicas.
I like the J-Drag format.

> Since my roadster is able to stay on pace with a friend's Turbo-S, does that make it a Super Car?
> If I find Muscle Cars can only be viewed in my rearview mirror, does that make it a Super Car?
> When a lots of enthusiast check out my car at Cars & Coffee, does that make it a Super Car?
> Since the latest Super Cool Corvettes (C-8) can't keep up, does that make it a Super Car?

Hummmmm, I Guess It Does!

If you are still building your dream, stay focused folks!

Thank You Dave & The Entire Factory Five Team!
