I was just thinking about having to cut a healthy five-figure check this coming November, then I was wondering about two big elephants in the room: taxes and shipping.
I know taxes are based on your specific location. FL is now taxing interstate purchases so there's no way around it, I'm just not sure if F5 will be charging me or if I have to account for the kit purchase and pay taxes on that during my registration.
The other cost is shipping. I've never shipped something this size across the country. Again, I know it's mostly dependent on location but how much have some of you ended up paying to have Stewart bring you the kit?

I’m in Florida. There’s no sales tax on my receipt. You can email Stewart transportation to get a quote for shipment.

You will only pay taxes once. If Factory Five ships to you via commercial carrier, e.g. Stewart, they will not collect any tax. It's between you and your local authorities. Typically, and has been my case here in Michigan, sales tax is paid when it's titled. After the build is complete. But I've heard of other states that collect it up front. You need to check. As far as transportation, you'll have a hard time beating Stewart. They're set up to deliver these with dedicated trailers that don't require additional crating, etc. Wild guess you're looking at $1500 - $2000 to get it to Florida. In that range. Although to be honest I don't know what recent gas prices changes might have done to their pricing. Factory Five should have given you the Stewart contact information. You can call them and get an actual quote.

My coupe is scheduled for delivery in July. Stewart quoted $1900 back in January.
I'm in the Melbourne area.

I'm about as far as you can get from Factory Five. I paid $2000 for shipping. Your state will figure out your tax based on build cost... another reason I deleted several expensive parts from my kit and sourced them out separately.

Thanks everyone. Right after I created this thread I noticed Stewart has a special link right on their website for the F5 shipping quotes so I sent them a request.
This is all good to know. I've got a few months to shore up my savings so I don't have to finance anything or use my CC. My donor was $2500, but none of that purchase went through official channels so that engine/trans just might have been "acquired" many years ago back when I lived in Wisconsin. :p

Yup, $2100 to Tampa.

FFR told me that if I pick it up in Warham, I'll have to pay MA sales tax plus of course the fuel cost. If I have it shipped (via Stewart to North Georgia) I don't pay sales tax, but there is that Stewart Transport cost. Stewart edged out MA sales tax.

When you title it in your state, you get credit for the MA tax. If you don't show your state that you paid the MA tax, you'll be taxed twice

Maybe I misunderstood what you said, I didn't pay any state tax to MA. When I go to register in TN, I'll only pay the TN tax. That's being taxed once.
But maybe I misunderstood what you said.

The way I understand it, if I physically go to MA to pick up my Roadster I'll be taxed for that sale at the MA sales tax rate. Bring that data with you to your registration in whatever state you live in and you'll be credited that taxed amount off the bill in your home state.
If I take the Stewart option I will not be taxed on the sale from F5 (since it's interstate commerce), but when I go to register it I'll have to pay the full tax on that purchase in the state I'm registering it.

Well if you didn't pay MA sales tax, then NO you won't get a credit for something you didn't pay. Not sure how much simpler it could be?
Read Theshandman post, #10, has that was my response

Unless you can prove where the drivetrain came from you may be setting yourself up for some roadbumps with your state theft bureau, at minimum may have to buy an indemnity bond. I had to provide a receipt for engine\trans.

In Connecticut they require receipts/ proof of ownership of all major parts. I used a donor on my first build 20 years ago. Had to show the title and bill of sale from the boneyard the car came from. Technology and tracking is even better now making it difficult to register without the proper documentation.

I bought the car from a local here in town who didn't have the title on hand, but he did have the latest registration to prove it was in his name. We whipped up a quick bill of sale, and I took the registration docs. I didn't need the whole car so I didn't care. I still have the car but it's basically scrap to me and I'd like it gone.
I should look into what FL requires. I might be worrying over nothing. Case in point, what if I collected a bunch of minor parts (engine block, crank, trans parts, etc...) over a long period of time over many different states and built them into a major part? What does Connecticut tie this "major part" label to in the assembly of an engine? Because my block has zero unique markings on it. Just casting numbers, nothing stamped anywhere.

I can confirm if you pick it up yourself in MA you'll pay MA Sales tax. I expect that to be credited towards my NC tax when I register the car so it will be close to a wash - or I'll have overpaid a little to MA. However, it only cost me about $400 to pick it up vs the $1400 delivery from Stewart and I also picked up my Engine, Trans, rear end from Forte's so I saved that shipping as well. Add to that getting to check out FF - all in all it was worth it (except for the NYC Traffic).
Don't forget about all the other costs after the order.. I've practically made a second home here for our Amazon driver. The daily parts orders of $20-$50 here and there have quickly added up. You'll likely find many little things you want to do a bit differently from the kit whether it be a 6AN flex hose instead of a rubber one with a clamp ring, or a nice billet led horn button... Or you're just stuck at a particular assembly you want to get finished but those two grade 8 bolts you need are POL - so a trip to the local hardware store can get you passed the step quickly. They may only be $4 bolts and $10 switches or a $20 hose, but man it adds up quickly. Don't forget a $200 battery too. Then you find out about all the wonderful things Breeze and Russ Thompson can do...

Will always be money to spend for as long as you own the car. Might be the latest & greatest new item that turns up for the car or just plain old maintenance items, you have a grease gun right?

I might as well join in. I picked my car up at FFR August of 2020 and they did not charge me any sales tax. I paid it when I registered it with DMV. It was kind of fun picking it up at FFR. Cost me $110 in gas and $178 in tolls.
