View Full Version : Unique paint scheme

This post is inspired by a comment @JeffKleiner made about trying colours other than red, blue, black or grey.

So let's see paint schemes (yours or from anywhere) that are other than these four colours.

I'll kick it off:

https://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=163958&d=1647363043

Another take on yellow:

https://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=163963&d=1647363093

Yet another yellow (this is from a video game though, but still cool)

https://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=163965&d=1647363342

If yellow is not your thing, even though yellow adds 13HP, then you can also go white

https://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=163960&d=1647363043

Too simple? Another white:

https://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=163959&d=1647363043

Still not crazy enough? No worries:

https://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=163962&d=1647363043

So let's see some more non-red-non-black-non-grey-non-blue colours

Zee,
If you aren’t aware, the #96 if the legendary Allen Grant FIA car. George Lucas, yes that George Lucas, designed the paint scheme.

You asked for something other than blue, red, gray or black. How about these? I did the same color on both; one with metallic black stripes and the other with pearl white.

Vintage photos of CSX 3020.....Yellow with a BIG black X shaped stripe over the hood.

I have heard that the current owner of this car has repainted it traditional blue / white stripes.

The second series of photos shows the same car from the rear.

I double dog dare anyone to copy this paint scheme.

Sans the anatomical references, I agree. If the body shape is attractive, more so if it is an icon, it is controversial to distract with an over powering paint scheme. I prefer to let the body shape speak for itself.
Some iconic vehicles are associated with specific colors.

This is an interesting read on color popularity:

I saw a wrapped Cobra (Color & Striped) at the 2019 Walter Mitty Race at Road Atlanta and found that these cars don't wrap well. These cars have so many curves with no body breaks between fenders that wrapping them just creates seams. I'd imagine a Monochromatic Metallic Color Scheme would really show the flaws when you get up close as Sir Jeffski stated.

For guys like me who hate stripes, I'd bet using a wrap to create some period correct looking stripes would work well.

That is almost as good as No Hood Scoop, Bumpers, Side Pipes, Dual Roll Bars & No Stripes!
Also, Kirkham called me when they built that car, but didn't go with the Chevy Powerplant!

My own personal, non-traditional touch - the ghosted stars are seen ONLY when direct sunlight hits them. In fact, countless people have gawked at the car and it's only after several minutes that they notice them with a big WOW. That's exactly what I was looking for - early non-adopters of my plan said the car would look like Evel Knievel.

Paint by Jeff Miller. Star size, shape, and decals for masking by me.

Well if we're going there...

Here's one I did a few years ago that at first glance appears to be a pretty conventional Viper Blue and Arctic White but if you look a little closer or catch the sun from the right direction the sapphire pearl flames in the stripes show up, much like Eddie's stars! It's kind of like a hologram and they come or go as you move around the car or turn your head. They're also darn near impossible to catch with a camera but here's a sample:

You could also go with a non-traditional stripe. While I like the concept, I decided it accentuates the radiator opening too much for my taste.

Cool surprise to see this! The #152 is my good friend John Phillips' "Phoenix" Mk2 that I was involved in building after his Mk1 met it's demise in a garage fire (hence the "Phoenix" name). I was also part of his Mk3 build that followed this one and have already had my hands on the Mk4 that he picked up a few months ago! The photo was from a gathering in Loxahatchee Florida in about 2003 that John put together with some of the other local FFR guys when Mike Forte and I were visiting.

RE: Striping around the radiator opening---the secret to making a graceful curve where the stripe transitions to go around the radiator opening is to dig a plastic baby bathtub out of the trash and trace around it :) :) :)

Thanks for posting the pic and refreshing some memories!

Just my opinion, and everybody has one, I find the lines on a Cobra are supremely good looking, but if you stare at the radiator opening long enough it just looks out of proportion or wrong shape or too big or something I don't know, but it is the only thing on the car that looks a little out of place to me. But still the sexiest car on the road.

Not just you, I much prefer the nose shape of the 289 or 427 with a splitter or a grill.

I think 427 S/C without a grill or a splitter but no fan or oil cooler looks kind of empty.

Mine is the traditional red with white stripes. When I was hunting to buy one I certainly preferred the dark grey with grey or black stripes. I wasn't too particular on finding the right color so much as I was finding a well sorted car first. Figured I could always paint it to my liking later. Now that I've owned it a while I'm finding that the grey and grey/black stripe combo is very popular and I suppose was made more so by the Mustang Elenor replicas out there. So now I'm leaning far away from the dark grey/grey combo. The red/white is growing on me. Not seeing nearly as many in red with white stripes these days. This post has given me lots of thoughts on the subject! I was at a car shop last week talking about quotes for painting and the moment I mentioned dark grey with grey stripes the guy said, "oh like an Elenor!". I instantly internally groaned... I really didn't like that movie and I didn't care at all for that dressed up Elenor mustang...

I'm also torn on the idea of keeping the red/white it currently is vs changing it. It was Carl Thompson's challenge car. I have all the racing logs and maintenance logs right down to the tire pressure that was run on each race day. Ya it's not like it was Ken Miles race car or anything... but still... I sway back and forth from keeping it red/white and the "it's mine now, do as you will". Of course the do I as will part also often says to me, keep it red and white! LOL. Anyway, sure are a lot of nice looking color combos.

So lovin' it! Really enjoying some of the ideas for color combos here.

I'm not 100% set on a color yet, but I can assure you it WON'T be traditional. The last thing I want my Cobra to look like is something someone already has.

It's like the Harley Street Glide crowd. How can you call your bikes "original" when there's 10 just like them on every block?

The Cobra body responds very well to dark colors, probably why there are so many dark blue, black, grey, etc. cars. IMO, way too many blue cars of any shade, show some imagination people. I remember the joke when a guy is asked which car was his, he said the blue one, problem was half the cars you could see were blue. Similar to the Lexus Brandywine, I went with a Honda Dark Cherry Pearl and Toyota Grey stripes. I have seen others choose similar color schemes. I wanted something a bit more unique without causing a controversy.
It comes down to what is going to make you happy and not reduce the sales value sometime down the road. Crazy colors and stripe schemes reduce the value of the car to many. You are paying the bill for the paint and stripes, do what makes you happy, but if you choose the road less traveled, be ready for comments.

The second vehicle I ever owned was a Chevy truck I bought in 1977 that was pea green with white inlays. It was only the second one I ever saw which should have told me something right there. I learned a hard and expensive lesson when I went to sell it, there was a reason I only ever saw one other that color; everyone hated it!

Ever since then whenever I bought anything expensive like cars, trucks, boats, airplanes, or houses I went in knowing I would not keep it forever so some day I would want to sell it. When it comes to cars white, black, red, blue, and silver will all sell easily as most people can accept one of those colors. Most of the nearly 50 cars & trucks I've owned have been "resale" red and it's certainly worked. By all means we should be making these cars ours but get too far out there (like bright yellow) and you pay for it later from my experience.

I went without the stripes, and was happy I did.

I've got a number of pics from "the old days" when the DSCC was doing events every month with a big event every year.

First thing I thought of was Jimmy Clarks rear engine Lotus.

Namrups, that was exactly the point: Jim Clark was my driver hero in the 1960's, and the Lotus formula cars and Cobras were my favorites. I had that paint scheme in my head for 30-some years, finally got a chance to apply it to an FFR as seen in the photo. This was a Mark II FFR, we called it the "Phoenix" build, as it replaced my Mk I that caught fire in our home in 2002! Personally, I loved this build and the paint scheme. Thanks for "getting it". I saw the “#96” 289 from the original post today in a museum! Here’s a couple pictures I took.
