View Full Version : Power Steering Cooler and Hydroboost

Hello All,

I am going to be installing a power steering cooler and I am also using a hydroboost brake system. I know the cooler gets installed on the return side. Is it preferable to have both the hydroboost and power steering return lines Y together and then run through the cooler or just have the power steering return line run through the cooler and the hydroboost return line bypass the cooler and y together at the pump return? In my head it makes more sense to have both returns run through the cooler, but the only diagram I found online had just the power steering return line going to the cooler. My sense is that it probably doesn't matter which way it is done, but thought I would ask.

Thanks,
James

I don't know if it was right or wrong, but for my #7750 build, I had both the rack and hydroboost return through the cooler. Don't know why it would hurt anything.

Thanks Paul. I assumed it would be ok, but I have certainly had some misadventures based on assumptions

That is a good idea to question. I have no experience w/ hydroboost but can remember a number of posts where deviating from the published hose routing in ways that would normally seem to make sense has caused problems. I am glad edwardb could provide a real world answer.

I know if it was me, both would go through the cooler. No reason not to do it that way, and why would you want to cool only 1/2 the fluid.

Low pressure lines to the cooler will save you some headaches -- fewer connection joints on high pressure side.

I installed my cooler right after the rack and before the line T's back in to where the hydroboost return joins. Now that I think about it there was no real reason other than it was convenient and more clean routing to where the cooler sits on the radiator shroud.

Thanks Michael. I decided to put a powersteering cooler in the front lower opening where the oil cooler would traditionally be mounted. I have both the powersteering and hydroboost returns connecting together and then running to to cooler and a single line returning to the KRC pump. I am not finished making all my lines, will try to post pictures when done.

I have just a cooling loop in the stock location. My advice is keep things as close to stock as possible. Just replace the loop with a cooler. I believe the newer SN95 cars had an actual heat exchanger.

Lidodrip - I'm at this stage where I'm ready to hook up lines for my power steering and hydroboost. I want to add the cooler in the same front lower opening. Do you have pics of your routing and where you put your T-adapter for the return lines before they enter the cooler? I want to do the PS cooler in the front lower opening as well. Also which cooler did you use?

Looking to be educated. I've had my car on the road for a few years and just cracked 5K miles. I have a Hydroboost system with the FFR power rack. When I built the car I spoke with several knowledgeable people about a power steering cooler. They suggested unless I was going to track the car, a cooler would not be necessary. I've never had any issues. What would a cooler do for me?

Jorge it probably won't do much at all. I used to get a loss of assist 1/2 to 3/4 through an autocross run on hot summer days. I switched to Honda PS fluid (bought from a Honda dealer) which almost fixed it but a cooler was the final answer.

Hello Darryl,

I don't have a great picture that shows the complete routing, but I have attached a photo that shows some of it. I used an AN splitter that has the return from the power steering and hydroboost coming together with a common output that then runs to the cooler. From the cooler there is one line that runs to the return side of the KRC pump. The AN splitter is located below the air filter (Coyote Gen 2). I will see if I can get some better pictures this weekend.

I used the Mishimoto 10 Row Universal Cooler - https://www.amazon.com/Mishimoto-MMOC-10BK-Universal-Cooler-Black/dp/B00CJ6IZ32/ref=sr_1_3?crid=SMF97EBF30B3&keywords=Mishimoto%2BUniversal%2B10%2BRow%2BOil%2B Cooler%2C%2BBlack&qid=1674691092&s=automotive&sprefix=mishimoto%2Buniversal%2B10%2Brow%2Boil%2Bc ooler%2C%2Bblack%2B%2Cautomotive%2C122&sr=1-3&ufe=app_do%3Aamzn1.fos.f5122f16-c3e8-4386-bf32-63e904010ad0&th=1

Here is the splitter - https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07JNNY8Q6/ref=pe_825000_114212990_TE_n_id?th=1

I realize that a power steering cooler is probably overkill for my intended use, but I like the look of having a cooler in the lower opening and it certainly won't hurt having one.

Perfect thanks for the pics - that Mishimoto cooler is actually the exact one I was looking at. If you have any pics of how you mounted it that would be great to see too. I think I'm going to mimic your setup as close as possible.

I do not/have not tracked my car but I did notice early on that my PS reservoir was almost too hot to touch without a cooler. I added it to the lower opening where the oil cooler would go. I took mine right off the rack mainly for the same reason as another poster, cleaner application. I didn’t want lines running all over and honestly, hadn’t considered the Y pre cooler till reading this. With that said, my reservoir is now much cooler and I can grab the lid without a glove or rag. The fluid will eventually all run through the system and get cooled. Maybe if it were Y’d precooler the fluid would even be more cool, but I do not have any issues with the way it is.

Darryl,

I am in the process of fitting the body right now, so my cooler is not fully installed. I am planning on using Replica Parts Roadster Radiator Aluminum Panel, but don't have that part yet. I took a couple pictures of routing, but this is still a work in progress. Cooler looks like it will fit the space well.
