View Full Version : MSD Blaster Coil (82073) Mounting?
As I continue collecting the parts for my EFI upgrade, I'm looking for options to mount the Blaster coil. My current canister-style coil is mounted to the front driver's side cylinder head. I haven't found any examples of a bracket that will work there for the new coil, and doubt that location will work with my power steering pump. Does anyone know of a clean way to mount this style coil without a two-fool coil wire?

At one time, Forte made a 1/4 thick aluminum plate for the 87-93 Mustangs that the coil
( similar in size and shape to the MSD part ) bolted to, and then the plate, with standoffs,
bolted to the front of the cyl head.
About the same position as your blaster 2.
I did not use it, and mounted the coil on an inner fender panel with a two foot coil wire.

Although it may not be as aesthetically pleasing remote mounting it and using a long wire may be a better functional option so that it is not exposed to vibration. I can't speak for this particular coil but I had 2 engine mounted MSD canister coils fail within about 5,000 miles on a car I built. I mounted the 3rd one on the driver's side "F" panel and it's still running strong 20,000 miles later.

3X. I've got mine mounter to the inside of the splash panel. If you use a small wire loom or tie wrap to one of the plug wires at the corner of the valve cover there is only about 8" of unsupported/loose wire running to the coil. Keeps the low voltage coil wires out of the way as well. Scott

Ten years and don't remember snagging it or having any other issues.
Thanks guys. I'm considering mounting the CDI box inside the passenger footbox or on top of it. I can mount the coil on the driver's side on a frame mounted bracket away from the header forward of the brake fluid reservoirs. MSD says the coil wire can be up to 2-1/2 to 3 feet long (shorter the better). Final positions will be dictated by the CDI wires to the coil.
Looking at the Terminator X wiring, it looks pretty plug & play with the injector harness and the Dual Sync distributor. The rest of the wiring is identical to the Sniper I have now with +/- battery, 12V switched, 12V fuel pump, (-) fan trigger, and a tach wire (from the CDI vs. coil).

I ran similar design Crane coils mounted off the engine. Never had a problem and planning the same location for this build, the coil wire isn't that long. I don't like coils on the motor.
I like the ignition/electronics box in the passenger footwell. Make sure everything is waterproof. I toasted a MSD box after washing the engine compartment, water ran through the mounting holes. Some pieces of electronics are not intended to be mounted upside down, they tend to act like a bathtub.

MSD coils, what a joke. Like Jeff, my car went through them like TicTac's, 3 in 12,000 mile. Dug out an old original 1993 Ford coil, put that on an never another issue That coil has over 150,000 miles on it
The iron core coils are fine mounted on an engine, but the canister coils are sketchy when engine mounted. They just don't have the quality
