View Full Version : Mk 4 - outer tie rod end - not drilled for a castle nut?

Installing the steering on my Mk 4 and noticed that the castle nuts for the outer tie rod ends were missing. Tie rod ends were in the box with the steering rack.

So I figured not a big deal - I can pick up a couple at the auto parts store quicker and easier than contacting FFR and having then send a pair of the appropriate castle nuts.

Then I noticed that the threaded portion of the outer tie rod end (the part that goes thru the spindle) is NOT drilled for a cotter pin as is shown in the build manual, and like there should be from a safety perspective. I've never been in a car where the tie rod end and the spindle have come apart and I don't want my Roadster be the 1st! :(

Am I missing something or did I receive incorrect tie rod ends?

Thanks

Lynn

Did you by chance see some ny-lock nuts in the box? Just a maybe......

Like many OEM tie rod ends on current vehicles the ones FFR is providing use a Nylock nut rather than a castle nut and cotter pin. If that worries you, after tightening the nut drill through it and the threaded portion of the tie rod end then use safety wire or a cotter pin.

Yep - there are nylock nuts. I just hadn't seen tie rods with other than a castle-style nut and cotter pin.

Thanks for clarifying the situation.
