View Full Version : 427 S/C layout feedback
Context: I don't know much about wiring, so I plan to order relays and switches and everything else (wiper motor, washer stuff) now so I can figure out the wiring and stuff. Since I plan to customize heavily to use period-correct knobs and switches, I want to practice and figure out how to wire them properly and cleanly (I also plan to use different switches for cruise control and change heater/wiper switches etc).
Here's my layout of the 427 S/C. Are there controls I am missing that I should be thinking about? Thanks so much.

I would put the cruise indicator light between the two cruise switches. I'd use separate switches for the vent blowers and get rid of the complexity of running a microswitch or something to prevent the fan on unless the vent is open. I'd put the vent fan switches right next to the pull knobs so the passenger can control his own air. I guess that you are planning push and pull rad fans, the push for looks? I get that but will comment that the right pull fan and proper shroud is all that you need. Be sure you can see the horn button through the wheel and it's spokes. I 'think' I'd move it a little to the right for that but not sure. I ended up painting the button orange after one time when I reached for it and missed and had to take my eyes off the road to hit it. I don't see an ignition switch (maybe it is the grey/white dot next to the headlight switch) but I'd put the red engine charge light right near it.

I'd suggest you somehow configure the steering wheel location and your seating position so that you can easily see/locate important functions. I realize you are trying to get a jump on things but without this knowledge you may end up doing it all over again. (ask me how I know!)

Here are some pics of my dash - slightly modified S/C layout with a glove box (that I made). I also used authentic Smiths gauges (mostly mechanical), lots of OEM knobs, Lucas toggles, and a smattering of Ford reproduction switches (including ignition, lighter, headlamp knob, etc...).
I also have schematics for this layout, if you're interested PM me.

I like the layout that Gumball uses, the tach is in front of the driver and the speedometer is off to the right.

Glove box holds the registration card and maybe a pair of son glasses. I know not much you can do with the heater behind it.

Your dash actually inspired me to go S/C :).

Not that it can’t be used for the 4 way flashers as you have noted but most use the button on the end of the turn signal stalk either for high/low beam switching or for the horn. Just something to think about…

I might have missed something, but it looks like you only have one directional?

I have the Russ Thompson turn signal switch, but with no button on the end. I have only one indicator for the turn signals - the presumption being that the driver knows which side is operating, so no need for separate L/R interior indicators. The high beams are operated by a reproduction Ford floor switch and I wired that into the harness using a reproduction '65/'66 Mustang wiring extension.

Just for something different to look at, here's my layout. There may be a few changes and adjustments. Probably won't commit to metal until I have seats placed and can do a final assessment of gauge visibility.
Behind the steering wheel are Tach, Oil Pressure and Oil Temp, these are about the only ones of real concern when running hard. The collection of five are top row Volts, Water Temp and Vac. Bottom row is Fuel Level and Diff/Trans Temp. There will be switches to configure a few gauges to read sensors in different locations. The Diff/Trans temp gauge will read either, with two sensors.
Ignition switches will be on the left side of the steering wheel. The "manila" switch & control panels are set for whatever switches, power output and indicator lights I might decide to use. I'm sure I've forgotten things, but the design permits easy changes with the interchangeable panels. I will change my mind, happened before, will happen again, easier to plan for this up front.
