View Full Version : frame dimensions
Hey,
What is the dimension of the MK4 frame? Google was of no help. Need to decide whether I get it powder coated by FF ($699 US) or locally but my local powder coater can only do 8' x 8' (max size).
Thanks.

Did you call these guys?:

According to their website they have a big enough booth.

I did. If I dont have the exact dimension and weight then I'll get it powder coated by FFR to stay safe.

I dont have the dimensions for you but its way too long for an 8' booth. The frame length is pretty close to matching the overall length of the car, so figure the frame is between 12-13' long

A little over 12 feet long and just under 5 feet wide.

Sorry I thought the issue was finding a big enough booth. I see now that what you needed was the frame dimensions for cost estimation purposes.

Both.
The places I called don't have anything larger than 12'. To stay safe, I'll get FFR to do the powder coating.

Unless FFR has improved on the prep before the powder coat, you might want to do the prep yourself. (remove weld splatter and degrease)

I had my frame delivered bare, I took the time to grind off all the splatter and other prep.

This is why I ordered my kit bare. I want a clean looking chassis without all the splatter. I looked into PC in my area but the range for PC was $1500 to $2000. I'm going to prep and paint it myself. Self etching primer, and then a few coats of Eastwood's 2K or POR engine enamel. I'm leaning towards the 2k paint because it is better with UV light and won't fade. I'm doing Ford Dark Blue, so my choices are limited with good products.

Zee,
Your question prompted me to look into alternatives to powder painting a supplied-bare-and-builder-prepped frame.
I have a guy, he says he can etch, seal and urethane paint it for ~$1500- $2k CAD. Not quite as durable as powder, but it would give me the opportunity to clean up the frame and have it the colour I want.

My humble opinion after having my hands on a few dozen chassis with the FFR powder coating---it's hard to beat the price, it's durable (some of the cars I've built have been 10-15 year old untouched "barn finds" and the PC has looked like new), and 99% of the time areas of weld splatter are unseen once the car is complete. The down side; if you want something other than satin black you're S.O.L.

Like Jeff said 99% of the frame you can't see, and when you open the hood, people look at your engine not your frame. I have yet to see anyone say anything about weld spatter when they look at my car. And weld spatter on my car was minimal anyway. Painting and prepping one of these frames is a ton of work and it is still vulnerable to stone chips and the like. The only thing i would do different is change the color to a silver or light gray on the frame. Maybe a light color would show more spatter. Just remember you can't see much of the frame when the hood is open.

You can't see the weld splatter, and the sun will never see the frame
