The fitting on the end of my FF accelerator cable is a bit too small for the firewall hole, but the manual doesn’t say anything about washers or inserts or anything. What have I missed?

Does it fits if you try it the other way at least partially? My guess is the the aluminum is offset a bit from the steel hole. If it’s already riveted you can run a bit through it to clean up the hole and it will fit just fine.

He said too small, not too big. I don't think it's anything to worry about, it's just working the throttle, no big stain on it Just tighten the nut will be fine

OMG, yes he did. So much for reading comprehension.
What Rich said.

I'd like to make a recommendation. This is a great time to ditch the cable and go w/ a mechanical linkage. Forte sells a kit or you can put your own together. I had a cable for 10 years and it worked pretty well. But I decided to go to mechanical. My first road test w/ the new linkage and the same carb return springs I drove part way around the block and came right back to the garage. The effort at the gas pedal was so light that the car was nearly undriveable. Each little bump in the road my foot moved the pedal. I quickly added another spring and then I could drive it.

If you don't mind me asking, I am curious to know why. You said you had a cable for 10 years and it worked pretty well, so why suggest a mechanical linkage?
(I am a noob and am trying to learn, so it's not a gotcha question)

So I ended up adding a fender washer on each side of the firewall. It really didn’t seem like the nut and fitting had a lot of bite without them, due to the size of the hole.
Thanks for all the suggestions!

Zee the linkage is SO much smoother than the best cable there is little comparison. My cable worked fine but I didn't know what I was missing until I replaced it. If it took 10# pressure to go full throttle w/ the cable I would say that it only took 6# w/ the linkage. So I added a second spring to bring it back to 10# and it was still much smoother.
