View Full Version : How Soon is Too Soon to Install Heat and Sound Mat?
Hi All - I have all the cockpit aluminum installed, except for the top of the transmission tunnel. Pedalbox is in. Just wondering how soon might be "too soon" to install acoustic mat and heat barrier in the footboxes and cockpit.
Thanks,

If the panels are not coming back out there is no reason not to IMO. Go for it

Man, I hope you left the outboard panel for each foot box removable. It's a real hassle getting to the front & inboard sides if you didn't. Doable, but you may wanna keep the kids out of the garage when you tackle the job.
BTW, I really like the Weldwood carpet cement (https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B0009X8PEQ/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1). It cleans up easily with mineral spirits when you get it on the face of the carpet - and you will - and gives plenty of time to smoosh the carpet into its final position.

In all the foot box side panels I installed the heat/ sound deadening on each panel before I installed them. I just cut them about 3/4" shy and then installed the panel. When the foot box was complete I installed strips folded in a 90 degree and filled in the corners that were left bare. It sure beat trying to lay in those foot boxes trying to stick that stuff on and hope you don't have to pull it off. But it worked well. It doesn't really matter what it looks like it all gets covered with carpet. I've seen some guys do a world class job of installing this stuff with all the lettering going the same way, perfect cuts and the like, and cover it with carpet. Laying the carpet was actually pretty easy. I found most of my pieces were trimmed very close leaving me very little to trim. Weldwood contaact cement worked great. The trick I found with using that was don't let one side dry completely so if you have to remove or readjust it does without ripping it back off. My carpet came out beautifully. I had to order a little bit extra from FFR to do the drop trunk. But definitely do not install the drivers side outside foot box until everything is done
Passenger outboard panel is in, but I'll do my best. Driver's side, I have lots of access.
I'm still debating whether to just go Thermo-Tec Suppressor everywhere, or, use a bunch of Noico 80 mil sound mat (leftover from my truck) along with some EZ Cool closed cell double-sided reflective mat for the footbox area.
I'm in Canada, so in April/May or Sep/Oct, a little extra heat may be worthwhile! :).
I'd like to think I'm smart enough to think that far ahead, but sadly, no. At least I left the drivers outboard panel off.
Any suggestions as to product? I originally though Lizard Skin, but here in Canada it will be $300+ along with the cost of the spray gun. And I'd have to mask everything off. I was thinking Thermo-Tec Suppressor (sound + heat), or, EZ Cool closed-cell foam for heat, and then a bunch of 80 mil Noico sound mat I have left over from my truck. Thanks.

Hi John,
First, thanks for answering a question I did not ask but have been thinking of.....
When you say two boxes of Dynamat they have few different sizes. Would you happen to remember which one (size sheets or their prod. #) that you used for your build?
Thanks John!

Hi Ray,
I used the 18"x32" size. Each box has 9 sheets. https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B00020CB2S/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&th=1. Don't bother with their roller; instead get a brayer https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B0007ZTX5Q/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1. You can use the handle end to smoosh the Dynamat into corners.
Note that this stuff is STICKY. Once it's down, it's down; there's no sliding stuff into position.

Uh... I think the Dynamat is a hard no for me here in Canada. One box $269 so I'd be looking at close to $600 with sales tax.
I just finished installing Second Skin Audio's Damplifier Pro and Heat Wave Pro in my roadster. I did the install right after the panels were riveted on. I chose Second Skin because it looked like a quality product and I did not want to have to tape everything off for the Lizard Skin application. In hindsight I don't think I saved much time as measuring and cutting all the pieces to fit took a very long time. I also believe it is significantly thicker, taking up valuable footbox space. It's not cheap but I'm sure it is going to do a great job with controlling heat and sound.

I used Kilmat. Not sure what shipping to canada will look like however. 2 boxes to cover cockpit and trunk

I used Kilmat too. It was very reasonably priced and it sticks. I wanted to piggyback on phileas_fogg's comment about leaving the outboard panel of the footboxes
off and/or making them removable. I did sound deadening and insulation on everything a couple months ago only to have to tear the insulation back off the drivers
side outer panel and drill out the rivets. All because I decided to upgrade to a hydraulic clutch. You can bet they're removable now including the top panel too. The
first time is always practice.
