View Full Version : Valve Cover Recommendation

As many of you know, when I ordered my BPE 347, I asked for the 427-style valve cover and air cleaner.

https://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=84577&d=1524422096

Now that I'll be redoing the intake to install the Inglese 8-stack, I thought I'd select a more representative set of valve covers. What do you guys recommend that would complement the stacks and work with the 347? Right now, I'm looking at these:

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000CEO6OK/?coliid=I1H7QLH1O7LHOL&colid=TU1R4N1KFE6A&psc=1&ref_=lv_ov_lig_dp_it

Do I need the "tall" covers like the ones on the car now, or will these work?

I completely agree with your decision to replace the 427 valve covers on your 347. You'll get tired of either, lying about the displacement, or explaining to people who "ooo and ahh" that it's really "only" a 347.

The amazon "Cobra" covers you chose are a perfect choice for the ultra cool Inglese 347 under your hood. It's going to be a much more impressive combination than the fake 427 valve covers.

I'm sure we're all waiting for you to post pictures of the completed combination :D

I use these : https://store.cobranda.com/caltavaco.html

They are a nice, heavy cast aluminum.....I added K&N style breathers to the standoffs.

And even though they are listed as "Tall", with stud mounted roller rockers,
I did have to add a 1/2 inch spacer under them.

Pedestal roller rockers fit fine, as they are, without spacers.

Maybe not that specific cover but think "COBRA" standing alone or "Powered By FORD: is your best bet. Whether or not you need tall covers is determined by your valve train. Just measure to see how tall the valvetrain is at its highest point.

Unless you have some kind of a special or high lift valvetrain assembly normal height covers would be fine.

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000CEO6OK/?coliid=I1H7QLH1O7LHOL&colid=TU1R4N1KFE6A&psc=1&ref_=lv_ov_lig_dp_it

Amazon is not showing the other valve cover in the set, and I will bet that it is
setup for a PCV valve.

With Weber carbs, I run without a PCV, and just vent through the breathers.

Check with Inglese, but I will bet that his system doesn't use a PCV either.

Not a problem in Colorado, since we are emission exempt, but It might make a
difference with your choice of covers.

Thanks, Derald. I have a set of Billet Specialties breathers to use, as i assumed no PCV with the Inglese setup.

Just my 2 cents but I like the stamped steel covers if you are after a more period-correct 289/Weber look. If not I like the look of this newer style in the color/finish of your choice. Scott

Those are the exact style that I have now and I do like them. I just haven't found them with "Cobra" on them.

I'm running these. They fit over T&D Shaft Rockers on AFR 225 heads. I like 'em. Indicated as limited supply. Price not shown, weren't cheap.

I like plain welded valve cover's without any engraved logo or fins, at some point I'll remove the ford sticker. It was on the covers when I got them Everyone is looking at the stacks not the valve covers. You will need the tall ones.

^^^^THIS^^^^ I figure the guy looking under your hood probably already knows it's a Cobra. I'm running welded aluminum but would run these if they would fit with my Jesel shaft rockers.

If Dave’s BPE 347 is like mine, it didn’t come with roller rockers. Without the roller rockers, would he still need the tall valve covers?

This is what I think I'll go with.

They are exactly the same shape/size as what I have now, so no issue with fit.

I have been through a handful of valve covers. My 347 has a turkey pan and I’m currently running those covers but in red.

I went with Ansen, they make a very nice valve cover and you can also have them customized (which I chose to do). There valve covers will also clear roller rockers, baffled and they have plenty of designs to pick from and the quality is excellent. I also picked up my air cleaner from them they were awesome to work with, highly recommend them.

I’m running these, supposedly tall, https://www.summitracing.com/parts/sdk-6a582-cp
On my 306 with roller rockers. They cleared with a little work on the oil fill baffle.
Just to be safe I’m using 3/8” gaskets from Mike Forte. They were the closest I could
find to the original Buddy Barr castings without spending $400.

Any interest in selling that set? I have been looking for that style for my Windsor based 427.

Thanks John

Guess I'm missing what the problem is? I like the 427 style covers on a small block, especially if that's the look you're going for. And that's what it boils down to. If you've changed your mind and want something else, then go for it. There are a bunch of folks that could not get those 427 style covers since they were out of stock and back ordered for a long time. You should have no problem selling them. Just for reference, picture below is a Mk4 that wandered into my shop this past weekend. It's an FE but the valve covers and the stacks work really well together. And these both have the Cobra logo on them. Just a thought.

Those Scott Drakes were always my favorite of the "Cobra Powered By Ford" style. Really like that crinkle texture.

For a different look that i always liked - you could consider these as well: https://performanceparts.ford.com/part/302-136

Personally I like the 427 covers. Unless your building a 289 FIA, or a slabside roadster, the MK4 FFR is based on a 427 powered car.
If your car is a 427 replica, I don't see anything wrong with your current 427 valve covers. They will look good with the stacks.
If someone asks, tell them it's actually a SBF, but being as it's a 427 replica, thus the 427 covers. Simple.:)

All I can add is that I will never again do the cast, black crinkle valve covers. My personal experience is they are subject to strange, hairline cracks that are extremely difficult to locate. I have two small JB weld "patches" on the outside of mine.

I am with AC Bill. These aren't original cars, these is your take on the original as the builder. For instance, you have the dash layout of the street 427 and yet the exhaust sticks out the side like the competition version (street 427 roadsters had exhaust underneath). Your gauges and switches are also modern. All that is perfectly fine, you're not trying to fool anyone and you're building your take on the Cobra - which in my opinion is as good as the authentic is most I've seen.

To *me*, the valve cover says it's a "427 Cobra" which is more a model of Cobra - IMO - than the size of the engine. After all, most people who build the 289 FIA don't really use the 289 ci engine. Half of MK4s now use the coyote engine and most of the remainder - I suspect - use a 302 based engine.

Just my 2 cents, in case your main motivation was not wanting to mislead.

I ordered these:

Thanks for all the comments and recommendations. In the end, I went with a simple design that is the exact shape that I have now. I decided on the polished vs. various color options, although the Ford blue intrigued me.

Just ordered these from CVF and plan on attaching the 427 Cobra Side emblem to them. I like the welded look and for $98, you can't go wrong. I've seen a few CSX with this look.
