I paid $450 US. They were in black but the place let me pick the color had quite a few to choose from. Would of been the same cost for white.

Has anyone done a DIY exhaust coating? I was looking at a product called ZyBar made by a company called Zycoat. Anyone have experience with it? Seems like a much cheaper option.

The add says ~$150.00 for 8 ozs. 32 ozs required for complete system. That's $600.00. Not much of a savings. Am I reading something wrong? I too would be interested in a DYI system. Not sure if this is it.

I paid about $800 to have Jet Hot coat my side pipes (black). IMO, no DIY finish is going to approach the durability of a professionally applied ceramic coating. That said, I seem to recall reading in the past about folks that had their side pipes coated white complaining that they look dirty after a while. So if what you want is white specifically you may want to consider just spraying them with white BBQ paint and then repainting them every so often when they look dirty. Personally I'd be pretty bummed if I spent $800 to have my side pipes coated white and they looked all dirty after a while.

Am I right if I say you guys are talking about coatings and maybe powder coating but not ceramic coating?

I don't think standard powder coating will tolerate the heat of side pipes.

My thought with the ZyBar was you only would need 12-16oz if you just coat the side pipes. Roughly $200-300. Zycoat and Eastwood both have high temp paints that would be the cheapest solution if you didn't care about reducing the heat. If I went with Zycoat I would probably put the ceramic on first a spray a white top coat.

If it were me, rattle can VHT and see if it holds up. If not look for a higher end option.

I sprayed my cobra exhausts from a can using Matt Black Stove Paint for around £40

Been OK for 18 months, would just re-spray them again if it started to wear, but it's been fine so far.

Yeah, I thought (could definitely be wrong) that FF5 offered powder coating on the frames but never saw anything about an exhaust coating option; high-temp or otherwise.
I know from my work that standard powder is only good to around 200°F sustained temperatures.
There are some $$$ specialty hi-temp powder coatings that are good to 500°F+, but they also require higher cure temps that a standard powder coating oven may or may not be capable of.

+1
check out VHT's flame proof line.
they boast resistance to intermittent temps up to 2000*!
and it comes in white.

Aren't the currently supplied side pipes polished stainless?
If so, you would need to thoroughly scuff that polished surface before painting, or the paint won't last long, won't adhere to the metal.
Even if they aren't polished, still need to scuff the surface before paint, and clean them really well afterward.
Just like any other paint job, pre-painting prep is key to a good paint job that lasts.

base pipe option is bare steel.
stainless is an upgrade at a cost.

Went with the VHT option in White. Main reason is the road chips and any other damage can be touched up or even repainted if necessary. Only problem is my car is not running yet so cant tell you how its going to hold up. Doug

I used white VHT on my coupe when I built it. I drove it for 3 years with just minor touch ups (stone chips mostly) and for the cost it can't be beat.

For the ceramic coating costs mentioned earlier... Do they prepare the pipes for that price you did you drop them off bare and ready to be coated?

The price I mentioned for Jet Hot included prepping the pipes, but IIRC they would charge extra if there was chrome that needed to be removed first.

Best reason to do the ceramic coating is to keep the heat in.

FWIW I ordered unpolished stainless side exhaust for my MK4 from Gas-N about a month ago. Georgie at Gas-N is going to get them ceramic coated for me (black). It was an extra $650 for the ceramic coating, and that includes an additional shipping cost from Gas-N to the ceramic coater. Any prep to the unpolished stainless is included.
