View Full Version : Setting Pinion Angle -upper link rod end length

I am setting the driveshaft angle and before I go too far with adjustments. I wanted to see if anyone has access to the rod ends or knows the length of the threaded portion of the rod ends. I thought I had made measurements during build but I can’t find them. The manual cautions to not have less than 3/4” thread engagement on either the panhard bar or the upper link.
Thanks in advance

Tx,
On my Upper link and Panhard bar ends I spray-painted the rod ends so that I'd know when I was getting into the Danger Zone.
Though this is a crude and likely NOT a common practice, it made worrying about the thread count a non-issue.
Hope this helps and sorry if it doesn't!
Good Luck!

Thanks Steve I appreciate the response but I don’t think it gets me the answer. . I already have them assembled, installed and torqued. I have about 1 1/4 inches of thread showing. My gut is telling me I have too much thread showing but I can’t be certain 3/4” is still engage since I don’t know how long the threads are

Hopefully, someone can get you the data that you need.

I checked some spare 3/4" rod ends that I have in the basement and they measure 1 3/4" of threaded shank.
If you are trying to set your pinion angle make sure you have the recommended 1/2"-3/4" of spacers under your trans mount. Odds are you won't be able to get the correct pinion geometry without them. At least that's my experience with my MKII. Scott

Thanks Johnnybgoode. I have three of Forte spacers under the trans mount and I believe I am within 0.5 deg. I plan to try and get that closer to 1 deg which should increase the amount of engaged threads. (Setting these angles is about as “fun” as doing crown moulding!!).

tx, Good rod ends are made to specification. Try googling the rod end by dimension and "specification". You likely will find the dimensions in someone's catalog page.
If you have off shore parts, all bets are off.

Yes exactly. Made my head hurt. lol.
There are a bunch of good threads on here if you get stuck. Good Luck. Scott

Admittedly this is 12 yr old info from my MkII but a quick check for pinion angle is w/ the car on stands and axle hanging you will have about 1/2 inch clearance from the rear surface of the banana bracket to the 3/4x3/4 diagonal panhard bar mount. Maybe someone w/ a newer FFR will comment if this is about correct still. Back then I was upgrading from a 4 link to the 3 link. I did it in stages over several weekends and at one point I had the banana installed but all 4 links were still in place. that 1/2 inch clearance was what the 4 links gave me so when I did the final step of the 3 link I adjusted it to match.

***Update***
Dan with Tech support at FFR advised that there are approximately 2” of threads on the Heim joints
