Old Version IRS hubs

I have a set of the old style IRS hubs for my roadster and will be cleaning them and adding the poly bushings. I have seen a few builds where zerk fittings were added so as to lube the bushings once installed but this was not always done.

My question for those who are in the know, is this really necessary?
If you have this old style IRS and didn't do it, would you do it when replacing bushings, if you did it, what zerks would you recommend?
