View Full Version : MK4 Approach Angle?

Curious if anyone has measured the approach angle of MK4 at the typical ride height? Obviously it changes a little from car to car due to each one’s unique variables, but was hoping to at least get in the ball park. I have a steep transition up from the road to my driveway and was curious if I’m going to have issues.

Search’s didn’t return anything.

Most things like speed bumps or steep driveways I try to approach from as close to a 45 degree angle or any angle other then straight on, if I think it might hit the front end. So far it has work as I haven't hit the nose yet. If this is what you are asking.

Thanks, that helps. Appreciated.

I was curious if someone had actually measured the angle so I could compare that to the angle of my driveway ramp.

Your mileage may vary, especially with DIY cars. If I was concerned about your issue, on your car, I would measure the geometry and trig it out. OR a straight edge and angle gage. Of course you will also have to apply the measuring technique to your driveway, but that is only one of many.
Oh, rate of approach is a factor that can lead to suspension compression, and altered geometry.

The video in post #1 of https://www.ffcars.com/threads/mk4-body-paint.643793/#post-6132097 shows how Taco Joe approaches his inclined driveway; that segment is at 1:55 min. That may help you visualize the max approach angle.

..45 degrees seems to work for me.

When our subdivision was built, they ran curbs the entire length of the street. So, you had to climb the curb to get into the driveway. That configuration is not Cobra-friendly. We put in a new driveway and cut the curb. Problem solved. But, as J R Jones said, "your mileage may vary"...
