Hello all,

As I am putting together my build plan, one of the things at the forefront is serviceability. One of the components that can fail in the IRS system is the half-shaft CV joints and boots. So, my question is, is the half-shaft supplied by FFR a standard Ford assembly, or is it a custom?
If I were to tear a boot or have a CV joint disassemble itself far from home, can I hit a well stocked parts store and expect to find a replacement?

Thanks for the info!

They are custom to FFR. The boot may be replaceable with something off the shelf.

They are custom to FFR, as Mike said. Much shorter than standard Mustang CV axles. But they are standard Ford CV joints on each end. The inners fit the Mustang center section. The outers fit the Mustang hubs. Also a dead giveaway they have the Ford part numbers on them. I had an occasion to replace a boot on one. Picked the boot off a Mustang parts page (Tasca Parts) and it fit just fine. Only complaint was they sold them in pairs and I only needed one. I don't know that any of the parts are typical parts store items. But for sure dealer items.

Something to consider with shadetree, side of the road repair is how the CV joints are installed. Not sure on the 2015 Mustang versions but the old T-Bird 8.8 used a retaining clip that you had to push past when pulling the CV tripod bearing off. Don't think you could do this w/o serious tools, perhaps in the 2015 system it is easier.

For the T-Bird CVs there were 2-piece replacement boots. These split like a clam shell so you could install w/o disassembling the axle. At best a temporary fix but might get you home.

nothing on the IRS is road side serviceable. Better to invest in AAA or similar than parts that "might" break.
