Hey Baby

Have a MK-1 currently running BFG T/A 245/45 ZR 17 Front and 275/40 ZR 17 Rear. I'm looking into the Nitto 555G2 @ 255/40/17 Front 315/35/17 Rear. Just spirited driving but no track time. Any concerns I should be aware of so far as fitment?

I run these Nitto tires on mine and love them. Great all around tire and seem to wear well. No complaints. Hope that helps.

I also have these tires. Great tires but be very careful in even the slightest wet conditions. Mine free wheeled with even a little acceleration…scared the hell out of me the first time. Luckily I was on a straight away!

Although they aren’t an all out performance tires the 555G2 are a good choice for a street cruiser that may occasionally see a bit of rain or cool temperatures. You mentioned going to a 315…are you aware that some mods need to be made to fit that size on the rear of a Mk1 or Mk2 and that they will need to be on a 10” or wider rim?

I run the Nittos and love them. I also run the 315's on a 10" rim in the rear with no issues and have a MK-1. However, your build may be a bit a different, so some careful measuring is necessary. I must of measured mine 20 times before purchasing the new set of rims and tires.

Thx guys, that's exactly the info I was looking for. Since I did not do the build, I'm not really sure what I have except that the set-up I have works. Would like to do the 315's but don't even know what to measure to see if they'd fit. Any help is most appreciated, thx. Bill

May I ask why you are looking to change to the 315’s in the rear? I am running 245/275’s on my Mark 4 and the combo seems to fill the wheel wells. Unsure as to where you live; but if you are not running in colder / wet geography you might look at the NT01’s as an alternative. They are great dry weather tires and at 275 will hook up MUCH better than the BFG’s you have been running.

I'm running the older NITTO 555's and as Jeff Kleiner said, they are good cruiser tires and do pretty well in warmer temperatures.
They work pretty well in the rain; however, I can easily light them up in 1st, 2nd & 3rd when it is warm and dry.
The front tires (245/45-17's) pair up nicely with the slightly taller rears which are (285/40-17's).
Since my car is a Street Cruiser, not an Autocross Bruiser, they are A-Okay for me.
I think the 255/40-17 with the 315/35-17 combo will really look great.

MK-IV Tuned Gen 1 Coyote, TKO-600, 3:55 rear. Currently running Nitto NT-01. 275X40X17 & 315X35X17. Finally got the traction I have been looking for.
Need to get high back seats now. No fit issues with either set using FFR supplied wheels & suspension. Dry traction is outstanding - wet is in the you need to have a light touch area. You also don't want to be riding around much under 40*F. Tires start to get slick. Can be damaged in the 20*F range.
Prior set were 255/315 NITTO 555R. Good traction but not to hard to overpower them. Same warnings about wet & temperature. Can be more aggressive with the NT-01's
Both sets will wear fast with tread wear rated at 100. The 555G2 by comparison are rated at 320 for speed rated or 200 for non speed rated. The lower the number the higher the traction & the quicker they wear. The G2 is much better in wet than any of the others.
A lot to choose from depending on how you drive. Good blacktop two lane moonshine roads are very tempting. I tend to run the car almost everyday the weather is agreeable. In NC that is most of the time except for today cold & rainy.
I also do occasional track runs & local AutoX etc. Not competitive just for fun & driver improvement. Would need to upgrade to power steering to get serious. No longer have the upper body strength I once did.
GoDadGo mentioned the "Look" these are the NT-01's

I just today installed a set of Toyo R888R 315x35x17 rears and 255x40x17 fronts. All I can say is they look very sweet! It's snowy with salted roads outside so can't give any driving reports until... Spring...
