Just opened my box from Factory 5 with IRS rear end to examine and start to work with it..... the plastic bag was full of at least a quart of oil that had leaked out.... see attached pictures. Checked fill plugs and gaskets there intact and seem to be leak free. If the box was stored on it side could the fluid leak out through the Axel ports that have blue plugs? Other?

Thanks
JohnP

Those blue plastic plugs are likely not intended to retain fluid during shipping or storage, but are really just dust caps. I'm actually a bit surprised there would be fluid in the diff when shipped.

The box was on its side in storage in my garage so it also my guess that it leaked past the blue dust caps on that side. Jus trying to make sure!

When I ordered my IRS from Mike Forte a few years ago, he told me that he receives them full of fluid but drains them before shipping them because sometimes exactly what just happened to you happens in shipping. When a shipper sees a box leaking some sort of mystery fluid, it gets held up as hazardous cargo for weeks. So, short answer is yes fluid will leak out of the blue plugs if the box is turned on its side.

I figure for what a new bottle of diff oil and a bottle of friction modifier costs I'd just drain out the old stuff and replace it.

John,

I agree with the others - nothing to worry about. Mine was received from FFR with a small amount of oil in it and a bit that had leaked out in transit. Just drain it and install it. Then fill it with fresh oil and modifier.

P.S. installing that thing solo was one of my early challenges in the build. Floor jack and ratchet straps are your friend with that maneuver...

John, Installing the diff isn't fun. Lot's of twisting into place.

Mine came filled with about 1 quart from Ford. I changed the fluid after 1k miles just for my warm and fuzzy.
