Headlight cover help

Whats the best thing to sand these with to get em to fit. I was trying to save mine from the trash today and ended up screwing one up even worse. Just ordered a new set from FFR so I dont want to repeat my first screw up. Also did you guys go right along with the instructions or is there an easier way? Also need to know about rivnut tools, whats the best type to get? Dont need the most expensive one on the market just need it for a few things.

A benchtop disk sander works well.

I do everything the hard way so I used a fairly coarse rat tail file to do the final shaping. I used an electric door planer to quickly get down to the rough shape though. Took about 3 hours per side. Came out pretty good so it's consistent with the rest of my build.
