View Full Version : Anyone use a Uhaul Auto Trailer

I am scheduled to transport my cobra a couple hours on one and want to know if it will work or if I should make other plans. Appreciate any input. It will have an all weather car cover on it so light weather shouldn’t be an issue. My concern is loading and unloading with the low ride height.

I have used one. It works fine. I was able to load the car on a flat surface without any clearance issues when going up the ramps. The trailer might weigh more than the car :p

Check the tires. The trailer that I had PSI was all over the place.

I have transported various cars on Uhaul trailers, including an 818. The high point is the joint where the ramp meets the deck. If that angle is too high, jack-up the tongue of the trailer with the tongue jack of a floor jack under the hitch. The less ground clearance you have the more likely you are to have an issue.
I do not tow with a cover on the transported car, the wind can cause the cover to abraide the paint.

I've towed mine half a dozen times. To load and unload I keep it attached to my rig and jack up the front, which lowers the rear. Optionally(?), a piece of wood at the base of each ramp helps mitigate the clearance issue.

DO NOT count on the front tires tie downs! I did that once and almost lost the car off the back. I cross-tie front and back with my own straps, and used the chain as insurance.

I’ve had several cars transported to and from me on them. The trick is to raise the tongue when loading and unloading to reduce the break I’ve angle between the ramps and bed. You can use the trailer’s jack but better yet is put a floor jack under the tow vehicle’s hitch ball. Do that and they work well!

Thanks guys!

Good point about the cover. My car is in gel coat still but will def keep that in mind when it comes time to paint.

Hi Jessie, I used a uhaul trailer twice, to bring it to a scale for weighing, and to the DMV stolen parts inspection. It worked fine. I recall that you have to watch the side pipes.

Front of the trailer needed to be raised loading & unloading. No issues on a number of tows.

Used one for my very first build back in 2009. No issues. Jacked up the nose as several suggested. Plus my ride height wasn't set and no side pipes yet so cleared easily. They were picky about what vehicles could be used. So I had to borrow a vehicle each time since the biggest thing we had at the time was a Chrysler mini-van. A definite no-go. The trailer worked OK. But U-Haul was the worst to work with. At least then. Wonder if they've improved? That plus wanting something closed we bought a Serpent Express. Haven't looked back. Well, except to trade it for a bigger one that fit the Coupe. Now the truck won't fit that one. :( Can't win.

There are probably several variations of UHaul trailers but, for the ones I have used the caution about the angle of ramp to main trailer body is important. The 'channels' that the tires run in have 3-4 inch near vertical sides. Some of them are trimmed well at the back end but others not. Look behind the rear tire on BEAR"S pic and you can see the long tapered cut down area on the near side channel. Then look at the first of EdwardB's pics in the same area and see that the channel side is cut down a little at the rear but nowhere near as long a taper. I was loading mine myself and that corner ran right under the driver foot box floor and put a nice 1 inch upward pointing crease along most of the footbox floor.

Yes they work, just follow the advice given. Extra ties downs around the rear axle, check angle when loading and unloading, and make sure you stay on the ramps. Another thing is check the tires on the one they want to rent you, I had a tire blow out on I95 just North of Boston but luckily the roadster was not on it.

Not sure why the concern about using a Haul trailer? They are very well build, made to carry way more weight than a cobra. I've hauled mine twice on one before I got a Serpent express, in fact I used one to haul my STI from Chicago back to O'Fallon. :D I'd like to own one if I could.

Yes I have used it several times before I bought a serpent express. Uhaul will want to know what car you will be trailering. I had to tell them it was a 1965 Shelby Cobra. They did not recognize FFR Cobra.

What did it weigh?

2120, with a little gas in it.

There is a rental place near here that rents an aluminum trailer for a little more money and I’ll use them next time. If you are towing with 6 cylinder or want to save on gas, it might be a better option as the aluminum trailers can save 1000 pounds.
